When a tree seed germinates, the first(primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots(the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots. 2, record 1, English, - feeder%20roots

2, record 21, French, - programme%20bois%2D%C3%A9nergie

Aquatic weeds can be grouped by the following categories : algae, and emersed, floating, submersed and marginal(shoreline) weeds. Algae are green, stringy mats, sometimes called "pond scum". Algae are primitive plants without leaves, stems or roots. Emersed aquatic weeds generally are rooted in the soil, with part of the plant growing above the water surface.... Floating aquatic weeds are seed-bearing plants that float freely on the surface of the water or have leaves that float on the surface, connected by long stems to roots in the lake bottom. Submersed aquatic weeds are rooted in the soil and the entire plant is under the surface of the water. Some submersed aquatic weeds have flowers that emerge above the water surface. Marginal aquatic weeds can be herbaceous or woody and grow around the margins of the water. Marginal aquatic weeds may grow either in the shallow water or along the banks of the shoreline. 3, record 27, English, - aquatic%20weed

3, record 27, French, - mauvaise%20herbe%20aquatique

We have used biomass energy or "bioenergy"-the energy from plants and plant-derived materials-since people began burning wood to cook food and keep warm. Wood is still the largest biomass energy resource today, but other sources of biomass can also be used. These include food crops, grassy and woody plants, residues from agriculture or forestry, and the organic component of municipal and industrial wastes. Even the fumes from landfills(which are methane, a natural gas) can be used as a biomass energy source. 3, record 59, English, - bioenergy

New consideration is being given to the potential utilization of surplus forest biomass as a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels for the generation of energy. A number of recent studies have examined the potential for the utilization of otherwise non-merchantable round wood and forest harvest residuals as feed stock for energy conversion plants... In addition to non-merchantable materials resulting from harvest activities, other sources of woody biomass could include stems taken from pre-commercial thinning in young forests and by-product residuals from forest product manufacturing operations such as shavings and saw dust. 2, record 96, English, - surplus%20forest%20biomass
