CONT

Aquatic weeds can be grouped by the following categories : algae, and emersed, floating, submersed and marginal(shoreline) weeds. Algae are green, stringy mats, sometimes called "pond scum". Algae are primitive plants without leaves, stems or roots. Emersed aquatic weeds generally are rooted in the soil, with part of the plant growing above the water surface.... Floating aquatic weeds are seed-bearing plants that float freely on the surface of the water or have leaves that float on the surface, connected by long stems to roots in the lake bottom. Submersed aquatic weeds are rooted in the soil and the entire plant is under the surface of the water. Some submersed aquatic weeds have flowers that emerge above the water surface. Marginal aquatic weeds can be herbaceous or woody and grow around the margins of the water. Marginal aquatic weeds may grow either in the shallow water or along the banks of the shoreline.

CONT

We have divided the canopy into three layers. Below-canopy woody tissues of canopy trees are treated as a fourth layer, and the soil and understory plants constitute a fifth layer. Within each layer, we are measuring important environmental variables including air temperature, photosynthetically photon flux(PFD), windspeed, and humidity. We are also measuring micro-environmental and plant physiological variables including PFD near leaf surfaces, temperature of respiring woody tissues, leaf nitrogen content and leaf water potential. The measurements of air temperature, wood temperature, PFD, wind, and humidity are made every 10 to 60 seconds and summaries of the data are stored each hour.

Trees up to five inches in trunk diameter are normally supported by guying with the wires attached to stakes, these guy wires spaced at 120-degree angles. Wires may be fastened to the tree in the same manners already discussed, although in this instance all attachment point should be at least six inches apart. Attachment should be as high in the tree as practical and certainly at or above the lowest branches. Again, guy wires should be attached to stakes driven 18 inches into undisturbed soil. The axis of the stake should be in line with the axis of the pull on the guy wire.

CONT

Most large trees and shrubs require support staking or guying to hold them erect against buffeting winds. Wood or metal stakes are usual for single-trunked trees up to 3 inches in caliper and provide better support if used in pairs. Guy wiring with turnbuckles is used for anchoring large plant materials, and guy placement ordinarily follows either a triangular or rectangular pattern around the main stem. Both types of support require regular inspection for proper tauntness--up to a year for woody plants....

Specialized pruning of woody plants into ornamental--but unnatural--shapes is called topiary. While visually arresting, these sculptural forms are high in maintenance needs whether arranged as clipped hedges, wall decorations of espaliers, pleached allées, or plant standards. Most require professional assistance to create and maintain, and, once begun, demand annual upkeep indefinitely.

CONT

Glyphosate is recognized for its effectiveness against perennial, deep-rooted, grass and broad-leaf weeds, as well as woody brush problems in crop and noncrop areas. It is a translocated, foliar-applied herbicide that can be applied at any stage of plant growth or at any time of year, with most types of application equipment, including the new wick, roller, and wiper devices. Its mechanism of action appears to be the inhibition of the synthesis of aromatic amino acids, which results in the inhibition of nucleic acid metabolism and protein synthesis.
