A highly structured, goal-oriented, individualized treatment program designed to return the person to work. Work-hardening programs, which are interdisciplinary in nature, use real or simulated work activities designed to restore physical, behavioral and vocational functions. Work hardening addresses the issues of productivity, safety, physical tolerance and worker behaviors. A work-hardening program may begin with an emphasis on exercise, but by the end of it two-thirds of the program should be work simulation. [L'Alberta Rehabilitation Centre] a remplacé ses équipes multidisciplinaires d'intervention en cas de blessure au travail par des équipes de traitement organisées en fonction des catégories professionnelles. Cette nouvelle approche baptisée «work hardening» (conditionnement au travail) comprend des activités de travail réelles ou simulées dès le début du traitement. Les tâches de conditionnement sont graduées de manière à rendre progressivement la personne plus [apte à] fonctionner au travail. Le programme vise surtout à assurer une transition sans heurt entre le traitement initial de la blessure et le retour au travail; il cherche en particulier à améliorer la productivité des travailleurs et des travailleuses de même que leur sécurité, leur endurance et leur comportement au travail.
