  • Solar Energy
DEF

A road surfacing material consisting of a thin layer of photovoltaic cells covered with glass aggregates bound by a translucent resin that can convert solar energy into electricity as well as recharge electric vehicles by induction.

CONT

Existing roads merely need to be covered with the solar panels–which are in fact slabs–without the need for any additional engineering work. These slabs were created so that vehicles, including trucks, can pass along without causing any damage. The panels are made up of photovoltaic cells carefully wrapped in several layers to make the slabs exceptionally resistant. Thin sheets of polycrystalline silicon... help to capture solar energy which is then converted into electricity.... In designing the photovoltaic slabs, [the company] also judged important not to create a product that requires the destruction of an existing infrastructure.

DEF

Apprentice plumbers assist with all regular duties of the job, and their supervisors... take the time to teach them and pass on valuable information. Generally, apprentices are responsible for things like bringing tools to a job site, supplying materials, cleaning up, and other duties which make their co-workers’ jobs easier in exchange for the education and training they receive. Apprentice plumbers learn a range of new skills and are provided opportunities to apply them under the watchful eyes of other plumbers. Supervisors watch and critique apprentices’ work and offer advice and ways to improve; as the apprentices improve, they are given more and more tasks and learn new skills such as how to replace pipes, change fittings, identify and locate leaks, and so on.

OBS

CONT

White Pass and Yukon Railway, at 175 km long, was the steepest pitched railway in Canada. Work began in 1898, at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, to provide transportation from Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Building of the narrow gauge railway was an extremely difficult engineering feat, requiring extensive blasting, tunnels and precarious bridging. Thirty-five of the 35 000 men who worked on construction were killed. The summit of White Pass was reached in February 1899 and the "last spike" was driven at Carcross on 29 July 1900. The gold was exhausted by the time work was complete, though the line struggled along carrying passengers and freight. The mining boom in the Yukon revived the railway, as lead-zinc was hauled from Faro, Mayo and Clinton Creek. The shutdown of the WP&Y in 1982, as a result of the collapse of the mining boom, deprived Whitehorse of some employment and its sea rail link.

OBS

White Pass & Yukon Route: Trade name of the Pacific and Arctic Railway and Navigation Company, British Columbia-Yukon Railway Company, and the British Yukon Railway Company.

OBS

Nowadays, "The Scenic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway of the World" is running for tourists from the cruising-ferry dock in Skagway, Alaska, to the White Pass, British Columbia, or to Carcross, Yukon Territory. The name "White Pass & Yukon Route Railway" appears on the tickets, leaflets and other products of the company.

CONT

OBS

The risk of such sensors as police devices depends to a great extent on how easy it is to instrument locations in the roadway without the driver being aware of it. The grime-proof channel would be read from below, and a car would have to pass directly over the reader, so it wouldn’t work on the open road, where cars could easily dodge the sensor. US style bar codes are easily covered, but when exposed, can be read from an inconspicuous roadside scanner. Aircraft style IFF devices would allow actual tracking of cars from a distance without fixed scanners.

It is pulled to and fro by an endless chain which is driven by the gearheads at each end of the armored conveyor. Maximum pulling force is about 20 tons. This machine is capable of working in seams 1 ft 8 in. thick up to 7 ft thick and can produce, load, and deliver to a gate conveyor from 1. 5 to 5 tons/min.
