Existing roads merely need to be covered with the solar panels–which are in fact slabs–without the need for any additional engineering work. These slabs were created so that vehicles, including trucks, can pass along without causing any damage. The panels are made up of photovoltaic cells carefully wrapped in several layers to make the slabs exceptionally resistant. Thin sheets of polycrystalline silicon... help to capture solar energy which is then converted into electricity.... In designing the photovoltaic slabs, [the company] also judged important not to create a product that requires the destruction of an existing infrastructure. 4, record 3, English, - photovoltaic%20slab

Apprentice plumbers learn a range of new skills and are provided opportunities to apply them under the watchful eyes of other plumbers. White Pass and Yukon Railway, at 175 km long, was the steepest pitched railway in Canada. Work began in 1898, at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, to provide transportation from Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Building of the narrow gauge railway was an extremely difficult engineering feat, requiring extensive blasting, tunnels and precarious bridging. Thirty-five of the 35 000 men who worked on construction were killed. The summit of White Pass was reached in February 1899 and the "last spike" was driven at Carcross on 29 July 1900. The gold was exhausted by the time work was complete, though the line struggled along carrying passengers and freight. The mining boom in the Yukon revived the railway, as lead-zinc was hauled from Faro, Mayo and Clinton Creek. The shutdown of the WP&Y in 1982, as a result of the collapse of the mining boom, deprived Whitehorse of some employment and its sea rail link. 1, record 9, English, - White%20Pass%20%26%20Yukon%20Route%20Railway

1, record 9, French, - White%20Pass%20%26%20Yukon%20Route%20Railway

The risk of such sensors as police devices depends to a great extent on how easy it is to instrument locations in the roadway without the driver being aware of it. The grime-proof channel would be read from below, and a car would have to pass directly over the reader, so it wouldn’t work on the open road, where cars could easily dodge the sensor. US style bar codes are easily covered, but when exposed, can be read from an inconspicuous roadside scanner. Aircraft style IFF devices would allow actual tracking of cars from a distance without fixed scanners. 1, record 13, English, - roadside%20scanner

Water pipe flushing is performed on distribution systems to remove any accumulated sediments or other impurities which have been deposited in the pipe. Water pipe flushing also improves the flow of water through the distribution system, allowing it to work at capacity. Flushing is performed by isolating sections of the distribution system and opening flushing valves or more commonly fire hydrants to cause a large volume of flow to pass through the isolated pipeline and suspend the settled sediment. 3, record 14, English, - water%20pipe%20flushing

Rapid plows. The Loebbehobel is a rapid plow which is equipped with three or four protruding picks or bits. The plow is double-ended and cuts as it traverses in each direction along the face. The machine normally travels at a speed of about 75 ft/min and takes a slice of coal 3-4 in. thick off the face at each pass. It is pulled to and fro by an endless chain which is driven by the gearheads at each end of the armored conveyor. Maximum pulling force is about 20 tons. This machine is capable of working in seams 1 ft 8 in. thick up to 7 ft thick and can produce, load, and deliver to a gate conveyor from 1. 5 to 5 tons/min. The plow works well in seams which are soft or are hard but friable but will not work well in coal which is "tough" or "woody". 1, record 22, English, - rapid%20plow
