The head of a shipping company for whom we designed training systems called requesting help. After discussing his situation, I suggested that he didn’t need new training systems and that the apprenticeship approach to training would work for him. On a boat, novice sailors have the time to ask questions and look over more experienced seamen's shoulders. Because of the close quarters and cultures of learning on a ship, it's easy to learn from the experts. And there are plenty of mechanisms in place to ensure that a neophyte's mistake doesn’t blow up the ship. Classroom training, or even e-learning, would have been an expensive and less-effective solution to this company's problem. 1, record 16, English, - apprenticeship%20approach

Leonard Adleman, a mathematician at the University of Southern California, combined microscopic bits of DNA to calculate a well-known computer problem. A DNA computer processes each step comparatively slowly, but it can work on billions of sites at once in a cell or a test tube. The standard computer problem that Adleman tackled in his lab is one that seeks a route connecting seven cities, some of which have no direct connections between them, in such a way that a hypothetical traveller arrives at each city only once without backtracking. He solved this puzzle by treating the chemical units of DNA as computing symbols, then assigning a series of symbols to each "city. "He then used DNAs natural affinity to join its strands together to create possible city-to-city sequences. In a test tube, very short bits of DNA zipped on to other bits, until all possible routes to the seven cities were assembled very rapidly. This sorting of codes serves as a type of computation even though the DNA was doing nothing unusual. 1, record 19, English, - DNA%20computer

Knowing which vaccine to stockpile before the outbreak of a pandemic is a major problem, because you don’t know which virus will cause the pandemic. It takes months to make enough vaccine for all potential victims, and flu vaccines only last about 12 months in storage.... There are also some technical problems with making a H5N1 vaccine. H5N1 kills chickens, so the usual way of making a vaccine that relies on chicken eggs doesn’t work very well. An alternative genetically engineered virus may need to be used to produce enough vaccine in a short period of time. 1, record 26, English, - genetically%20engineered%20virus

The formation of the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Record Association can be credited to the initial work of the Central Newfoundland Regional Medical Records Committee established in 1977. Challenged with the purpose of discussing issues of common concern, this committee grew in size and scope to become a forum for mutual problem solving and education advancement. Initial topics discussed at the Central Newfoundland Regional Medical Records Committee include patient care plans, medical audit programs, and family profiles. Long Distance Caregiving. In today's society, it has become fairly common for grown children to leave home to pursue different lifestyles and work opportunities. It's also becoming more common for parents to move.... As a result of all this movement, a growing number of adult sons and daughters are discovering just how hard it is to try to ensure the welfare of aging parents who live hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles away. A quick-fix solution to this problem of distant caregiving might seem to be to have the parents relocate, to bring them nearer to the grown children and their families, perhaps even to have them move in with them. 2, record 31, English, - long%2Ddistance%20caregiving

1, record 31, French, - soins%20%C3%A0%20distance

The solids conveying in the feed hopper is generally a gravity flow of particulate polymer; the material moves down the feed hopper by its own weight. Unfortunately, this does not always work without problems. Some materials have poor bulk flow characteristics and may get stuck in the feed hopper. This problem is called arching or bridging. It is likely to occur when the particle shape is irregular, when the particle size is small, and when the internal friction of the bulk material is high. 3, record 53, English, - arching

Biological effects of ionizing radiation. ... at the upper end of the scale, there is no radiation exposure so high it will guarantee that every exposed individual will suffer the effect. Nor at the lower end is any exposure so low that it will carry no risk to anyone of inducing the effect. These radiation effects are therefore said to have "no threshold." Logically, it follows that any exposure to radiation, no matter how small, carries some risk and that any reduction in exposure, even from an already very low level, confers some benefit. However, it is not always appreciated that the absence of a "safe" threshold is a theoretical assumption and a safety precaution rather than something that can be proven. It is also not well understood that the toxic effects of radiation, for which there is no defined safe level, may not differ fundamentally from those of some chemical toxins for which a "safe" level in the body or in the environment has been declared. 1, record 54, English, - no%20threshold
Record number: 54, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Complicating the problem of public perceptions of the level of risk associated with radioactive wastes is the confusion induced by two fundamental principles of radio-biological and radiation protection theory. The first is the "no-threshold" hypothesis, and the second is the "as low as reasonably achievable, "or ALARA, principle. The first principle holds that there is no threshold below which exposure to radiation is entirely safe. The "no threshold" hypothesis-that any exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, will increase the probability of a harmful consequence to an exposed individual-is an important scientific concept.... it is generally agreed that it is wise to err on the side of safety and work from the assumption that there is no safe level. 1, record 54, English, - no%20threshold
