The head of a shipping company for whom we designed training systems called requesting help. After discussing his situation, I suggested that he didn’t need new training systems and that the apprenticeship approach to training would work for him. On a boat, novice sailors have the time to ask questions and look over more experienced seamen's shoulders. Because of the close quarters and cultures of learning on a ship, it's easy to learn from the experts. And there are plenty of mechanisms in place to ensure that a neophyte's mistake doesn’t blow up the ship. Classroom training, or even e-learning, would have been an expensive and less-effective solution to this company's problem.

Leonard Adleman, a mathematician at the University of Southern California, combined microscopic bits of DNA to calculate a well-known computer problem. A DNA computer processes each step comparatively slowly, but it can work on billions of sites at once in a cell or a test tube. The standard computer problem that Adleman tackled in his lab is one that seeks a route connecting seven cities, some of which have no direct connections between them, in such a way that a hypothetical traveller arrives at each city only once without backtracking. He solved this puzzle by treating the chemical units of DNA as computing symbols, then assigning a series of symbols to each "city. "He then used DNAs natural affinity to join its strands together to create possible city-to-city sequences. In a test tube, very short bits of DNA zipped on to other bits, until all possible routes to the seven cities were assembled very rapidly. This sorting of codes serves as a type of computation even though the DNA was doing nothing unusual.

Mr. St. Thomas enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces as an Air Traffic Controller Assistant on March 15th, 1973. At the time he enrolled he met the air crew standards for medical fitness.... It was while in Trenton that he first suffered from an allergy problem.... At approximately this time he was advised by his physician that he had bronchial asthma, and prescribed a Ventolin inhaler. During this period to 1980, there does not seem to have been any serious problems, and he had no difficulty in doing his work. Indeed, Mr. St. Thomas maintained his private pilots license, glider pilots license and his air crew medical status.

Long Distance Caregiving. In today's society, it has become fairly common for grown children to leave home to pursue different lifestyles and work opportunities. It's also becoming more common for parents to move.... As a result of all this movement, a growing number of adult sons and daughters are discovering just how hard it is to try to ensure the welfare of aging parents who live hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles away. A quick-fix solution to this problem of distant caregiving might seem to be to have the parents relocate, to bring them nearer to the grown children and their families, perhaps even to have them move in with them.

Biological effects of ionizing radiation. ... at the upper end of the scale, there is no radiation exposure so high it will guarantee that every exposed individual will suffer the effect. Nor at the lower end is any exposure so low that it will carry no risk to anyone of inducing the effect. These radiation effects are therefore said to have "no threshold." Logically, it follows that any exposure to radiation, no matter how small, carries some risk and that any reduction in exposure, even from an already very low level, confers some benefit. However, it is not always appreciated that the absence of a "safe" threshold is a theoretical assumption and a safety precaution rather than something that can be proven. It is also not well understood that the toxic effects of radiation, for which there is no defined safe level, may not differ fundamentally from those of some chemical toxins for which a "safe" level in the body or in the environment has been declared.

CONT

Complicating the problem of public perceptions of the level of risk associated with radioactive wastes is the confusion induced by two fundamental principles of radio-biological and radiation protection theory. The first is the "no-threshold" hypothesis, and the second is the "as low as reasonably achievable, "or ALARA, principle. The first principle holds that there is no threshold below which exposure to radiation is entirely safe. The "no threshold" hypothesis-that any exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, will increase the probability of a harmful consequence to an exposed individual-is an important scientific concept.... it is generally agreed that it is wise to err on the side of safety and work from the assumption that there is no safe level.

CONT

To become applicable, most didactic strategies must be combined with the constraints provided by the structure of the domain and with the resources provided by the model of expertise. In general, the problem of merging didactic and domain knowledge dynamically-a theme of further work on MENO-TUTOR(Woolf and McDonald, 1984a)-can be quite complex. The resulting articulation is critical to pretting curriculum decisions and explanation generation under the system's control.

CONT

Separating the domain knowledge base from the teaching knowledge provides tremendous engineering efficiency, allowing the teaching knowledge to be more clearly formalized, evaluated, and reused.

CONT

... the ADVISOR must monitor a user’s interaction with the system, attempt to identify user goals and offer, as appropriate, advice based on the user’s goals and common design strategies as defined in the domain knowledge base.

OBS

The structure of the domain in the database can be frame-based, rule-based, script-based or take the form of semantic nets, didactic plans, bites, or genetic graphs.

[An instructional mode in which] the student can take complete initiative in solving a problem. He can choose a problem or be assigned one. He works through the problem step by step, calling on the... expert to perform the operations. He can work it through entirely on his own or invoke the tutor whenever he wants help.... He can... ask the tutor if his answer is correct. He can ask for another problem.

CONT

With the indexing of problems according to models, the student can be allowed to choose which topic she wants to learn about next, thus building her own curriculum (student-directed mode).

As opposed to "tutor mode."

It is recommended that work in the following fields of atmospheric chemistry be intensified or initiated : Examination of the extent to which methyl chloride(CH3C1), methyl bromide(CH3Br) and carbon tetrachloride(CC14) are anthropogenic or natural, thus clarifying the problem of the "natural reservoir" of chlorine in the stratosphere.
