Canada and the EU signed a framework trade agreement at the December 1998 Canada-EU Summit covering two-way trade in animals, animal products, fish and fish products which provides for future mutual recognition of sanitary measures. This agreement allows recognition of equivalent sanitary measures for these products while maintaining high levels of protection of human and animal health. It will facilitate trade, and is supportive of the general objectives of the World Trade Organization(WTO) Sanitary and Phytosanitary(SPS) Agreement.

Au Sommet Canada-UE de décembre 1998. le Canada et l'Union européenne ont signé un accord cadre portant sur le commerce bilatéral des animaux, des produits d'origine animale, du poisson et des produits du poisson qui prévoit, à terme, la reconnaissance mutuelle des mesures sanitaires. Cet accord permet de reconnaître des mesures sanitaires équivalentes pour les produits visés tout en maintenant des normes élevées de protection de la santé humaine et animale. Il facilitera les échanges commerciaux et soutient les objectifs généraux de l'Accord sur l'application des mesures sanitaires et phytosanitaires de l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC).
