CONT

CLIVAR. Acronym for the WCRP's [World Climate Research Program] study of Climate Variability and Predictability, scheduled to run from 1995-2010. It focuses on the variability and predictability of the "slow" climate system, i. e. those physical processes working on seasonal, interannual, decadal, and centennial time scales.

CONT

Concept of fast and slow climate systems. Fast: atmosphere & upper ocean & land surface; water is recycled on timescale of a month or less. Slow: deep ocean & cryosphere & lithosphere; water is recycled on long timescales. Fluctuations in the climate system are a result of the interplay between the fast and slow climate systems.

CONT

CLIVAR would focus on the variability of the "slow" climate system - for example, the oceans, ice and snow masses, and land surface characteristics.

OBS

Slow systems include the ocean except the upper ocean, and the ice sheets which adjust on times scales of decades to centuries.

OBS

The Global Baseline Surface Radiation Network(GBSRN) has been designed in response to the Joint Scientific Committee(JSC) Working Group on Radiative Fluxes(WGRF) recommendation that the World Climate Research Program(WCRP) establish a global baseline network of surface stations to support studies of global climate change. The mission of this network would be : to monitor long-term trends in radiation fluxes at the surface to provide validation data for satellite determinations of surface radiation budget.

Since 1985, monthly means of the surface energy fluxes have been systematically extracted from periodicals, monographs, data reports and unpublished manuscripts. After certain standardization and formalization procedures, these monthly means were stored in the Global Energy Balance Archive paper records. In November 1986, the GEBA was made a project(A7) of the World Climate Program-Water.

Core project of International Geosphere-Biosphere Program. BAHC is an interdisciplinary project combining and integrating expertise from many disciplines, in particular eco-physiology, pedology, hydrology, and meteorology. BAHC in this respect has a transfer function : on the one hand developing techniques and algorithms to provide climatic data needed for hydroecological research, thereby translating the results of the World Climate Research Programme(WCRP) into the scales relevant for studies of changes of the conditions at the land surface, and on the other hand, providing soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer at larger scales, in particular, the areal pattern of heat and moisture fluxes according to land-surface heterogeneity. BAHC concentrates on investigations at scales where detailed studies of hydroecological processes are feasible in selected areas representing major ecosystems of the world and across boundaries between different ecosystems(ecotones, biome boundaries, etc.).

In order to understand better the tropical ocean/atmosphere system and its effect on the climate at higher latitudes, the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere(TOGA) program was initiated in 1985 and extends over a ten-year period. TOGA is part of the World Climate Research Program(WCRP). The WCRP was established by the World Meteorological Organization(WMO) and the International Council of Scientific Unions(ICSU), with the objective to determine to what extent the climate can be predicted and the extent of man's influence on climate.

In 1987-after several years of development work-the Department of Meteorology and Wind Energy(now : Wind Energy and Atmospheric Physics Department) at Riso National laboratory introduced WAsP-a powerful tool for wind climate estimation, data analysis and siting of wind turbines. WAsP constitutes a complete analysis and application package. Wind data, whether in the form of a time series or a climatological table, can be transformed into regional wind atlasas. Such data may be the users own data or general climatological data. The program can be applied directly for estimation of wind climate with wind atlas data from the Danish and the European Wind Atlasas and corresponding data collections from other countries-all over the world.

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment(WOCE) is by far the largest, most ambitious oceanographic experiment ever carried out. The WOCE observational program began in 1990, but the origins of WOCE go back to the late 1970s. The experiment has involved the efforts of more than 40 nations over a period of more than 10 years, making use of several different satellites, dozens of ships, and thousands of instruments... In 1983, the CCCO [Committee on Climatic Change and the Ocean] and the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme established a Scientific Steering Group(SSG) to design and implement a global scale oceanographic experiment the World Ocean Circulation Experiment.

A new booklet published by World Meteorological Organization, World Health Organization, and the United Nations Environment Program, with support from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Delaware, describes the important relationships between climate and health. Climate and weather can influence mortality, the spread of certain diseases, and population overall well-being and productivity. A significant change in climate, such as that projected to occur under global warming, this can have widespread impacts on health.

The Global Precipitation Climatology Project(GPCP) is an element of the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment(GEWEX) of the World Climate Research Program(WCRP). It was established by the WCRP in 1986 with the initial goal of providing monthly mean precipitation data on a 2. 5 x 2. 5 degree latitude-longitude grid for the period 1986-1995. This was recently extended to the year 2000. The GPCP will accomplish this by merging infrared and microwave satellite estimates of precipitation with rain gauge data from more than 30, 000 stations.
