  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
CONT

Spain is involved in the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and the World Climate Research Programme as well as the EC Global Change Research Network.... In 1997 the synoptic observation network have 89 surface stations, 7 upper air stations, 238 automatic weather stations and 13 weather radar, mostly located along the coastline.

CONT

Databases such as these are vital complements to the synoptic observing network for evaluating regional-scale models.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
CONT

Core project of International Geosphere-Biosphere Program. BAHC is an interdisciplinary project combining and integrating expertise from many disciplines, in particular eco-physiology, pedology, hydrology, and meteorology. BAHC in this respect has a transfer function : on the one hand developing techniques and algorithms to provide climatic data needed for hydroecological research, thereby translating the results of the World Climate Research Programme(WCRP) into the scales relevant for studies of changes of the conditions at the land surface, and on the other hand, providing soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer at larger scales, in particular, the areal pattern of heat and moisture fluxes according to land-surface heterogeneity. BAHC concentrates on investigations at scales where detailed studies of hydroecological processes are feasible in selected areas representing major ecosystems of the world and across boundaries between different ecosystems(ecotones, biome boundaries, etc.).

The GPCC(Global Precipitation Climatology Centre) is a central element of the Global Precipitation Climatology Project(GPCP) which was established by the WMO/ICSU [World Meteorological Organization/International Council of Scientific Unions] Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme [WCRP] at its Seventh Session(Lisbon, March 1986). The GPCC itself was established in August 1988 at the "Deutscher Wetterdienst"("DWD", National Meteorological Service of Germany) starting with a research and development phase. The GPCC is now going to be operational, and it is operated by the DWD as a contribution to international climate observation and research activities. The GPCC has internationally defined functions. In the future, the GPCC will act as a GCOS [Global Climate Observing System] specified global data centre for precipitation, and in this role, it will continue to participate in the GPCP, as agreed by WCRP, GCOS, and DWD. It also co-operates with WCP-Water, Global Runoff Data Centre(GRDC), UNEP-GRID Programme, and FAO Water-Department.

In 1983, the CCCO [Committee on Climatic Change and the Ocean] and the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme established a Scientific Steering Group(SSG) to design and implement a global scale oceanographic experiment the World Ocean Circulation Experiment.
