Cognitive bubbles are closed small and focused communities that reinvent their own vision of the world, their own truth and are created from cognitive filters.

CONT

In what has been called a "cognitive bubble," we don’t hear voices with other relevant points of view. They’re just not there. This singularity of voice can be upfront or inadvertent and passively imparted to us by our social contacts. Indeed, when networks developed for social reasons become informational networks, what else can we expect? "Echo chambers" go a step further. Where a cognitive bubble omits contrary views, an echo chamber ... actively distrusts and disparages them.

OBS

The term "Indigenous knowledge" is sometimes used to refer collectively to the complex knowledge systems that are based on the world views of Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous knowledge reflects the interdependence between the communities and their traditional lands, and is based on observations, lessons and skills acquired over many generations through direct experience. It is a living and dynamic process that is still evolving and is critical for community survival as well as resource management and sustainability.

OBS

The plural form, "Indigenous knowledges," is often used to show the diversity of knowledge and the distinctiveness of Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous knowledges include traditional ecological knowledge, Inuit knowledge, Métis knowledge and First Nations knowledge.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Peuples Autochtones
OBS

The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact.

biome. A biological subdivision that reflects the ecological and physiognomic character of the vegetation. Biomes are the largest geographical biotic communities that it is convenient to recognise. They broadly correspond with climatic regions, although other environmental controls are sometimes important. They are the equivalent to the concept of major plant formations in plant ecology, but are defined in terms of all living organisms and of their interaction with the environment(and not only with the dominant vegetation type). Typically, distinctive biomes are recognised for all the major climatic regions of the world, emphasising the adaptation of living organisms to their environment.

The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty adopted on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar, on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. Thus, though nowadays the name of the Convention is usually written "Convention on Wetlands(Ramsar, Iran, 1971) ", it has come to be known popularly as the "Ramsar Convention"... The official name of the treaty-The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat-reflects its original emphasis on the conservation and wise use of wetlands primarily to provide habitat for waterbirds. Over the years, however, the Convention has broadened its scope to cover all aspects of wetland conservation and wise use, recognizing wetlands as ecosystems that are extremely important for biodiversity conservation in general and for the well-being of human communities. For this reason, the increasingly common use of the short form of the treaty's title, the "Convention on Wetlands", is entirely appropriate. The Convention entered into force in 1975... UNESCO serves as Depositary for the Convention, but its administration has been entrusted to a secretariat known as the "Ramsar Bureau", which is housed in the headquarters of IUCN-The World Conservation Union in Gland, Switzerland, under the authority of the Conference of the Parties and the Standing Committee of the Convention

February 15 is National Flag of Canada Day. It marks the day in 1965 when our red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and in hundreds of communities from coast to coast. This is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our flag and what it stands for-a country and a citizenship that are the envy of the world. In our often understated ways, be it instructing students in a school classroom, taking time to listen to the stories of veterans, or volunteering at the local community centre, Canadians share their pride in our flag and in their common values. In its striking simplicity, the National Flag of Canada speaks to the exciting challenges and opportunities of our future. At the same time, it speaks to all that we have accomplished together as a people and to those moments that have served to define us. The creation of our flag in 1965 was such a moment.

Ethical consumption, also known as socially responsible consumption, is a trend where consumers ask questions about the company that produced the goods -- choosing to patronize the companies which have "positive" profiles and avoiding those with "negative" profiles.

OBS

The very name of "ethical consumption" is still an open issue, and varies from ethical consumption to consumption in solidarity, responsible consumption, and fair consumption.... The idea of "ethical consumption" should initially be based on a definition of ethics. For those who understand the concept of Ethics as the definition of criteria to identify Good and Evil, it is important for the concept of Ethical Consumption to include another idea of consumption that is not based on individualism. The word that best defines this relationship with the rest of the world is "solidarity. "It qualifies it and defines the importance of others in the ethical values on which consumption is based. In this case we are talking about "ethical consumption in solidarity. "There is also a simplified version called "consumption in solidarity", which appears in the literature referring to consumption that not only considers our personal welfare but also considers general welfare. This is a consumption in which production is completed, generating an impact on the ecosystem and society in general. Under this idea, the choice of type of consumption can benefit or hinder the creation or maintenance of the productive jobs in a specific society, the preservation of ecosystems and the promotion of the general welfare of communities, countries and the entire planet. "Responsible consumption"(an expression used in Europe, particularly in France), appears where there is an awareness of the power of consumers, which become economic units with an important role to play, just as important as businesses and market regulatory boards. It implies an idea of economy that wishes to provide answers to citizens who belong to an economic and political world that considers man as a mere consumer. In this respect, consuming in a different way represents paying attention to what the money that we give to buy goods and services is financing, thus bringing economic pressure to bear from below that compensates

CONT

The CSI [Clark Sustainability Initiative] shall be approached as a process of continuous learning and innovation open to all members of the university community. The concepts and means of measuring "sustainability" and "socially and ecologically responsible consumption practices" shall be subject to regular reassessment and reconsideration in light of new experiences and understandings.

In this groundwork for a biospheric systems ethics, human beings as well as historical communities qualify for the attribution of intrinsic value. That does not mean, however, that all things in the biospheric environment so qualify. Significantly, natural systems are not the only kind of entities we find in our world. There is a multitude of atoms and molecules that are not integrated in the functional structure of living systems and of the biosphere : they make up the atmosphere and the oceans, the rivers, lakes, soils, mountains and deserts of the globe.

CONT

So far, Canada has been slow in building the right sort of training "bridges" to carry young people successfully from the world of school to the modern world of work.
