... the storyteller in the Montagnais oral tradition is the equivalent of the historian and writer in western societies which favour writing. He embodies the identity of the Amerindian community through the tales of which he is the guardian. A city of the Yukon Territory and its capital since 1953, located at kilometre 1476, just off the Alaska Highway. The city lies mainly on the western side of the Yukon River, nestled in a protected valley surrounded by Canyon Mountain(locally known as Grey Mountain) to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn Mountain to the south. Located at the head of navigation on the Yukon River, Whitehorse grew significantly by becoming a temporary stopping point--past two major obstacles on the river, Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids--for prospectors heading for Dawson(then known as "Dawson City") during the Klondike Gold Rush Years(1897-1899). In 1900, with the completion of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway from Skagway in Alaska, to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, the community grew around the point where the railway and river met, on the western side of the Yukon River. After the gold rush, Whitehorse's population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route(a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N. W. T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining(copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. Though the mines shut down in Yukon and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ended its operations 2, record 56, English, - Whitehorse

The Sustainable Development Research Institute(SDRI) was established in April 1991 to foster policy relevant research on sustainability. The Institute merged with the Institute of Resources and Environment in 2002 to form the Institute of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, within which SDRI remains as a research group. SDRI encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, departments and other centres at UBC, as well as other institutes and programs undertaking sustainability research in Canada and around the world. SDRI attempts to break away from the restrictions imposed by the traditional compartmentalization of research, and transcends disciplinary boundaries in its search for solutions. Our projects involve researchers from the natural sciences, applied sciences, health sciences, social sciences and humanities, working with partner organizations in the private, public and NGO sectors, with a strong focus on policy relevance and community engagement processes. 1, record 64, English, - Sustainable%20Development%20Research%20Institute

Associations of states. Independent states may enter into forms of co-operation by consent and on an equal basis. The basis for the co-operation may be the constitution of an international organization, such as the United Nations or the World Health Organization. However, by treaty or custom other structures for maintaining co-operation may be created. One such structure, the confederation, has in practice either disintegrated or been transformed into a federation. In recent times the British Commonwealth of Nations and the French Community have provided examples of associations of states of a special type. Membership of these two associations would not necessarily affect the primary legal capacities and personality of member states any more than membership of an organization and has less effect than membership of some organizations, for example, the European Economic Community, which has a slight federal element, albeit on a treaty basis. 3, record 65, English, - association%20of%20states

3, record 66, Spanish, - Fondo%20Monetario%20Internacional

The Community Access Program(CAP) is a government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada, that aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and skills they need to use it effectively. With the combined efforts of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, community groups, social agencies libraries, schools, volunteer groups and business community, CAP helps Canadians, wherever they live, take advantage of emerging opportunities in the new global knowledge-based economy. Under CAP, public locations like schools, libraries and community centres act as "on-ramps" to the Information Highway, and provide computer support and training. CAP is the key component of the Government of Canada's Connecting Canadians initiative, whose goal is to make Canada the most connected nation in the world. 2, record 68, English, - Community%20Access%20Program

2, record 68, French, - Programme%20d%27acc%C3%A8s%20communautaire

Today, many hundreds of companies from all regions of the world, international labour and civil society organizations are engaged in the Global Compact, working to advance ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. The Global Compact is a direct initiative of the Secretary-General. The Global Compact involves all the relevant social actors : governments, who defined the principles on which the initiative is based; companies, whose actions it seeks to influence; labour, in whose hands the concrete process of global production takes place; civil society organizations, representing the wider community of stakeholders; and the United Nations, the world's only truly global political forum, as an authoritative convener and facilitator. 1, record 71, English, - United%20Nations%20Global%20Compact

2, record 71, Spanish, - Pacto%20Mundial

This RADARSAT based map will help scientists to better understand the dynamic behaviour of the ice sheet and provide them with a greater insight into the effects of human activity on the Southern Continent. 2, record 77, English, - Antarctic%20Mapping%20Mission

World Evangelical Alliance is a global ministry working with local churches around the world to join in common concern to live and proclaim the Good News of Jesus in their communities. WEA is a network of churches in 127 nations that have each formed an evangelical alliance and over 100 international organizations joining together to give a worldwide identity, voice and platform to more than 420 million evangelical Christians. Seeking holiness, justice and renewal at every level of society-individual, family, community and culture, God is glorified and the nations of the earth are forever transformed. Christians from ten countries met in London in 1846 for the purpose of launching, in their own words, "a new thing in church history, a definite organization for the expression of unity amongst Christian individuals belonging to different churches. "This was the beginning of a vision that was fulfilled in 1951 when believers from 21 countries officially formed the World Evangelical Fellowship. 1, record 83, English, - World%20Evangelical%20Alliance

February 15 is National Flag of Canada Day. It marks the day in 1965 when our red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and in hundreds of communities from coast to coast. This is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our flag and what it stands for-a country and a citizenship that are the envy of the world. In our often understated ways, be it instructing students in a school classroom, taking time to listen to the stories of veterans, or volunteering at the local community centre, Canadians share their pride in our flag and in their common values. In its striking simplicity, the National Flag of Canada speaks to the exciting challenges and opportunities of our future. At the same time, it speaks to all that we have accomplished together as a people and to those moments that have served to define us. The creation of our flag in 1965 was such a moment. 1, record 88, English, - National%20Flag%20of%20Canada%20Day

2, record 88, French, - Jour%20du%20drapeau%20national%20du%20Canada

Policing takes place in a complex world that requires fast thinking and quick reactions. The profession demands many skills, both mental and physical. To test your suitability, the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, in partnership with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, has developed the Constable Selection System. The System has four tests which determine eligibility for an employment interview :-an aptitude test;-a written communications test;-a physical skills and abilities test; and-a video simulation test. The Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police(PREP) is the name of the physical skills and abilities test.... PREP Test Components. There are three separate components to the PREP : a screening component to ensure your medical readiness and two performance components to assess your physical capability(the Pursuit/Restraint Circuit and the Aerobic Shuttle Run). 1, record 89, English, - Physical%20Readiness%20Evaluation%20for%20Police

This is "four-on-four" play, with no goaltenders and plenty of action! All games are outdoors on a lake which is home to 24 ice surfaces. This means that many teams can play simultaneously for an exciting three days. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the world.
