A conservation measure aiming at returning a degraded ecosystem or population to its original condition in order to correct past abuses that have impaired the productivity of the resources base.

The concept of "sustainable development" was first used in the mid-1970s, to suggest a broad policy goal of integrating environmental considerations into economic decisions. In 1980, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources(IUCN), in conjunction with UNEP [United Nations Environment Programme], the World Wildlife fund(WWF), and other organisations, published the World Conservation Strategy(WCS). In the WCS, the current and more complex implication of sustainable development emerged to imply, for example, operational linkages between resource use and sustainable yields, in light of the needs of future generations.

Pour la Journée Mondiale de la Conservation, l'UICN [Union mondiale pour la nature] publie la Stratégie mondiale de la conservation (SMC ou WCS en anglais) (sous-titrée : «La conservation des ressources vivantes au service du développement durable»), avec la coopération du PNUE [Programme des Nations Unies pour l'environnement], du WWF [Fonds mondial pour la nature] et en collaboration avec l'UNESCO et la FAO [Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture]. Ce document, fruit de deux ans de travail et reconnu comme le manifeste le plus important des années 80 dans le domaine de la conservation de la nature, redéfinit le fondement intellectuel de celle-ci. La SMC insiste sur un fait essentiel : la conservation et le développement durable ne sont pas ennemis, ils sont inséparables.
