The World Drivers’ Championship was first organized in 1950. It is awarded [annually] to the driver who has gained the most points in Grand Prix races during the season. For each race, the winner gets 9 points [10 points since 1991], the second 6, the third 4, [the fourth 3, the fifth 2], down to 1 point for sixth place.

Usually written "World Drivers Championship", without the apostrophe after "Drivers".
