World expositions usually has exhibits on human or social themes, as the Expo 67 in Montréal, Québec, "Man and his World", or on economic or environmental themes, as Expo 86 in Vancouver, British Columbia, "Transportation and Communications."

OBS

The term "exposition" means the show itself and "exhibition", "the act of showing or the display. "For events of universal interest, the word "exposition" is used for the official designations while current usage also uses "world exhibition" though an inappropriate generic. The term "fair" meaning "a gathering for the purpose of showing goods and products often with entertainment or a midway" is also an inappropriate generic for such world events.

World exposition sanctioned by the International Bureau of Expositions, held in Vancouver 2 May-30 Oct. 1986. The theme, Transportation and Communication, celebrated the centenaires of the founding of Vancouver and the arrival on the Pacific coast of the first passenger train. Fifty-four governments and industries from six continents participated and there were over 22 million individual visits to the site. The commissioner general was Patrick Reid. Located along Vancouver's inner-city waterway, the 70 hectare site featured over 80 pavilions and many indoor and outdoor performance venues, including the Xerox International Theatre, a 1500-seat outdoor amphitheatre; The Big House, a 400-seat theatre of longhouse design; The Barn, a 300-seat proscenium theatre; and the Street of the Expo site on which a street festival took place throughout the exposition's run. The Canadian Pavilion, separate from the main site accessible to visitors by a four--minute ride on Vancouver's new Advanced Light Rapid Transit system, housed five performance spaces including a 500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, the 380-seat Amiga Studio(the exhibition's only enclosed theatre), and the 350-seat Inner Stage.

Expo ’98(in full, 1998 Lisbon World Exposition) was an official specialised World's Fair held in Lisbon, Portugal from May 22 to September 30, 1998. The theme of the fair was "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future", chosen in part to commemorate 500 years of Portuguese discoveries. The Expo received around 10 million visitors in 132 days. 155 countries and organizations were represented.

L'Expo '98 ou l'exposition universelle 1998 a eu lieu du 22 mai au 30 septembre 1998. Elle s'est tenue à Lisbonne (Portugal) et avait pour thème : «les océans, un patrimoine pour le futur». Cette exposition a eu lieu à l'est de la capitale portugaise, au bord du Tage, à quelques kilomètres du centre ville, quartier d'Olivais, sur une ancienne zone industrielle rasée, réhabilitée, et renommée Parc des Nations à cette occasion. L'objectif n'était pas de créer un infrastructure temporaire, mais un nouveau quartier pour la ville. L'Exposition s'étendait sur 70 hectares et accueillait 160 pays et organisations.

The International Youth Forum Against Racism, which took place at the Canadian Pavilion at the World Exposition in Hanover, Germany on August 8-12, built on the accomplishments of youth who participated in the "Action 2000" initiative. It provided world youth with an opportunity to advance the work they had begun at the International Stop Racism Youth Forum in Ottawa. It also emphasized developing strategies for youth input and participation in the deliberations and decision-making of established international bodies.

But the Bureau International des Expositions(BIE)-with 48 member-countries from around the world-is expected to choose the 2005 Exposition host in 1997. Canada 2005 Exposition Corporation, the body charged with obtaining the right to hold a world exposition in Calgary in 2005, will be sending a delegation to meet with the BIE in Paris, France, December 12 and 13, 1995.
