Dragon fever is what happens every June when Dragon Boat racing teams from all over the world compete on the waters of False Creek to celebrate an event that is rooted in Chinese tradition since the 4th century BC. The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival or Alcan Dragon Boat Festival takes place every June at False Creek in Vancouver. It is the largest and oldest Dragon Boat Festival outside of Asia. It was founded in 1986 by Honourable David See-Chai Lam and Milton Wong at the 1986 Vancouver World's Fair(Expo 86). It was first produced as a demonstration sport, being the first dragon boat race/festival outside Asia. It has grown in leaps and bounds and is not only recognized as North America's biggest and best, but also as the festival which kick started many other dragon boat festivals in the western world. Harmony House is a second stage shelter for women and their children who are survivors of violence. We provide a transition period from crisis shelter services to independent living in the community. At Harmony House we provide safe, affordable housing for up to a year, along with a programme of individual and group support, accompaniment, advocacy and referral.
