On 18 April 1982, on the occasion of a symposium organized by ICOMOS Tunisia and a corresponding meeting of the Bureau in Hammamet, it was suggested that a day be established to celebrate the diversity of heritage throughout the world. From this idea, the International Day for Monuments and Sites was born. This project was approved by the Executive Committee who also provided practical suggestions to the National Committees on how to organize this day. Le 18 avril 1982, au cours d'un colloque organisé par le Comité tunisien de l'ICOMOS, qui coïncidait avec une réunion du Bureau à Hammamet, il fut discuté de la création d'une Journée pour célébrer la diversité du patrimoine à travers le monde. À partir de cette idée, la Journée internationale des monuments et des sites a vu le jour. Ce projet a été approuvé par le Comité Exécutif qui a fournit des recommandations pratiques aux Comités Nationaux sur l'organisation de cette journée.
