The Sustainable Development Research Institute(SDRI) was established in April 1991 to foster policy relevant research on sustainability. The Institute merged with the Institute of Resources and Environment in 2002 to form the Institute of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, within which SDRI remains as a research group. SDRI encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, departments and other centres at UBC, as well as other institutes and programs undertaking sustainability research in Canada and around the world. SDRI attempts to break away from the restrictions imposed by the traditional compartmentalization of research, and transcends disciplinary boundaries in its search for solutions. The Earth Sciences Sector(ESS) of Natural Resources Canada is committed to increasing its involvement in strengthening the capacity of developing countries. For decades, Canada has worked in partnership with developing countries in applying geomatics and geoscience technologies to address a wide variety of important economic, environmental and social issues. This effort has led to immproved capabilities of these countries to achieve sustainable development and better living conditions, while fostering long-term relationships between Canada and the developing world. To allow Canada and ESS to build on many successful technology transfer projects and to seek out new partnerships, ESS is launching a new initiative called The Earth Sciences International Capacity Development Centre. Le Secteur des sciences de la terre (SST) de Ressources naturelles Canada (RNCan) veut augmenter sa participation dans le renforcement des capacités des pays en voie de développement. Pendant plusieurs décennies, le Canada a travaillé de concert avec les pays en voie de développement afin de trouver des solutions à divers problèmes socio-économiques et environnementaux par l'application de technologies modernes dans les domaines de la géomatique et des géosciences. Ces efforts ont permis d'augmenter la capacité de ces pays de développer leurs ressources naturelles de façon durable, contribuant ainsi au bien-être de leurs populations, tout en établissant des relations à long-terme entre le Canada et le monde en développement. Pour favoriser davantage le transfert de la technologie entre le Canada et les pays en voie de développement, le SST lance une nouvelle intiative appelée le Centre international de renforcement des capacités en sciences de la terre.
