Wide-flange beams and columns were developed soon after World War I in Luxembourg. These have wider and thicker flanges than normal sections and the flanges are of uniform thickness, making the connections, splices, fixings, and joints much simpler and cleaner. In the U. S., which pioneered their use on a large scale, these larger and heavier sections were rolled with varying widths of flange for the same depth of beams, simplifying the range of connection details needed in complex structures. 2, record 8, English, - wide%2Dflanged%20steel%20column

The Utopia Pavilion was one of the most noticed of the five theme pavilions at Portugal' s World Exhibition in Lisbon. For the first time at a World or Universal Exhibition, a show was staged for over 3 million spectators. It took co-author and artistic director François Confino three years during which he worked with American, Canadian, French and Portuguese staff to see this incredible challenge through. Soaring effects and gigantic special effects were specially designed, and extremely complex mechanical systems bred movement into flexible materials and stage sets at an unusually large scale. Through close collaboration with Philippe Genty, the director, Oceans & Utopias enticed the audience on a fascinating journey through mythology, conquest and the anguish of those at sea known to everyone faced with the boundlessness of the ocean. 1, record 11, English, - Utopia%20Pavilion

1, record 11, French, - Pavillon%20de%20l%27Utopie

A computerized database of aerial survey results, this information holding is summarized by sector within each country using dBASE III Plus. Sector surveys were numbered consecutively(1 to 763) in a clockwise fashion by country around the continent, and their lengths calculated from aeronautical charts(scale 1 : 1, 000, 000). Records for each survey sector contain species counts, sector lengths, and "eco-unit" designation which defines a geographical entity of broadly similar habitat. Principle habitats in each survey sector are described and classified in intertidal, near-shore and inland zones(where appropriate). For regional analyses, eco-units are grouped into three main regions : North Coast, Atlantic Coast and Pacific Coast. Each survey sector segment has been identified on the Western Hemispheric coverage derived from the 1 : 1, 000, 000 Digital Chart of the World(DCW). 1, record 13, English, - South%20American%20Shorebird%20Survey%20Database

1, record 13, French, - Base%20de%20donn%C3%A9es%20sur%20les%20relev%C3%A9s%20d%27oiseaux%20de%20rivage%20en%20Am%C3%A9rique%20du%20Sud

Cast shadows are most appropriate on large-scale 3D models viewed from low elevations. In these situations readers expect to see cast shadows based on their real world observations. Cast shadows generally look better with soft edges and low to moderate intensity(darkness). On small scale maps cast shadows can interfere with oblique hill shading, especially in steep-sided valleys where the shadows can fall on adjacent illuminated slopes. This causes valley bottoms to appear indistinct. 3, record 14, English, - oblique%20hill%20shading

Overview of resampling methods. From the perspective of space, a satellite camera or sensor takes images that provide unique Earth information at scales ranging from very small to very large. To better understand an image, its shape, scale and perspective often are changed by rectification, orthorectification or map projection to relate it to real world coordinates. During that process, however, gaps between pixels may form, requiring that images be resampled to fill in those missing pixels. There are basically 3 methods of resampling : nearest neighbor, bilinear interpolation and cubic convolution. 4, record 15, English, - resampling

DOUGLAS, Douglas Sea State. Douglas Sea Scale. Douglas Scale. Douglas Swell Scale. Douglas Sea and Swell Scale.... what do they mean? Douglas is the name given to a set of tables used to describe sea and swell conditions. The Douglas Sea tables refer to the waves generated by the wind in the locality at the time, the Douglas Swell tables refer to decaying waves originally generated by distant winds, and the Douglas Sea and Swell tables are a combination of the two. Originally, Douglas made no mention of heights or wave periods, and used only words to define the sea and swell conditions, e. g., slight sea, moderate sea or long low swell, short moderate swell. The combined definition was produced by a sea description followed by a swell description. But different publications have interpreted the Douglas Scales to produce wave heights and periods; and different interpretations have led to confusion. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, there is no internationally recognised definition or official status for any of the Douglas scales. 2, record 19, English, - Douglas%20scale

They are also high dimensional, meaning that there are many measurements taken of each person, multimedia object, or point on the ground. The "data point" representing one person is made up of their age, gender, educational level, occupation, and whatever else was recorded. Suppose there are 12 attributes recorded for each person. A formal Commission for Agricultural Meteorology of IMO was appointed in 1913 but a meeting was delayed by the First World War. The Commission was re-constituted in 1919 and held its first meeting at Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1923. Subsequently it held six additional meetings; the seventh and last being at Toronto in Canada 1947. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment(WOCE) is by far the largest, most ambitious oceanographic experiment ever carried out. The WOCE observational program began in 1990, but the origins of WOCE go back to the late 1970s. The experiment has involved the efforts of more than 40 nations over a period of more than 10 years, making use of several different satellites, dozens of ships, and thousands of instruments... In 1983, the CCCO [Committee on Climatic Change and the Ocean] and the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme established a Scientific Steering Group(SSG) to design and implement a global scale oceanographic experiment the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. 3, record 31, English, - World%20Ocean%20Circulation%20Experiment

A vast amount of sea ice information is today available at the various ice services in the world. Almost all of this information is stored in the form of ice charts for operational purposes. For statistical or climatological use the chart format is however not convenient and the information needs to be digitized. This is done by assigning numerical values to the ice parameters and to read these values at given grid points on the chart. The charts prepared by the various ice services do not all contain the same number of parameters. The resolution and accuracy also vary according to the use for which the charts are intended. A large degree of flexibility has therefore to be built into the design of both code, format and grid. It should allow digitization of historical ice charts as well as current ones in order to obtain a comprehensive computer-compatible sea ice data bank which is currently updated. The SIGRID format is mainly designed to meet larger scale climate requirements but it may also be used by national services for other purposes. 1, record 33, English, - Format%20for%20Gridded%20Sea%20Ice%20Information
