English

Subject field(s)
  • Climate Change
CONT

Biophysical exposure [is] exposure to the climate-related biophysical world. This includes rapid extreme events(e. g. typhoons, rapid floods/droughts) as well as slow onset changes(e. g. sea level rise, gradual temperature increase).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

One of several constant-pressure levels in the atmosphere for which a complete evaluation of data derived from upper-air observations is required.

OBS

Currently the mandatory pressure levels are 1000 mb [millibars], 925 mb, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, 400 mb, 300 mb, 250 mb, 200 mb, 150 mb, 100 mb, 70 mb, 50 mb, 30 mb, 20 mb, 10 mb, 7 mb, 5 mb, 3 mb, 2 mb, and 1 mb. The radiosonde code has specific blocks reserved for these data. To have a more complete vertical picture, significant levels of radiosonde observations are also evaluated. Until just after World War II, mandatory levels were defined by values of height above sea level.

DEF

En un radiosondeo, nivel que corresponde a una presión tipo para la cual es preciso dar la temperatura y el viento observados (1000, 925, 850, 500, 400, 300, 250, 100, 70, 50, 30, 20 y 10 hPa).

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
  • Polar Geography
CONT

Greenland claims the second largest ice cap in the world, smaller only than Antarctica's on the other side of the globe. The ice cap reaches a maximum height of 3700 m at Gunnbjorn, while the land under the ice is pressed into a concave basin, extending to altitudes below sea level. Ice-free land is restricted to the coastal fringes, which is considered in two biogeographic divisions : the high and the low arctic tundra.

OBS

ice-free land: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

CONT

CONT

There are only four basic kinds of stratigraphic traps : unconformities, porosity permeability pinchouts, reefs, and drape structures.... Reef Traps. Reefs are productive in many parts of the world. Many types exist, such as atolls, table reefs, pinnacle reefs, barrier reefs, fringing reefs, biostromes, and bioherms. They occur as small dome like features that may be reflected in the overlying sediments by drape.... The size of a reef ranges from a few acres to several square miles. Seismic exploration is the best way to find reefs. The reef core grows upward and usually outward as the sea level rises. Detrital reef material falls on the ocean side, forming the fore reef. The back reef is formed on the lagoon or quiet side by deposition of limestone and lime mud...

CONT

Stratigraphic traps are traps created by the limits of the reservoir rock itself, without any structural control. ... Stratigraphic reef traps are amongst the most important type of trap in Alberta, where reefs of Devonian age, formed mainly of stromatoporoids host much of the petroleum. They became ideal traps when a change in the regional environment caused the reefs to be buried by muds, forming an impermeable seal and cap rock.

CONT

OBS

Initially this programme was called the World Climate Impact Studies Programme(WCIP), overall objective of which was to assess the sensitivity of socio-economic sectors to climate variability and change. In 1991, additional task of developing options for socio-economic response strategies related to climate variability and change was added to the programme. The main thrusts of WCIRP include :(i) testing of methodologies for national climate impact and sea level rise assessment;(ii) providing coordination of national climate impact and response strategies programmes;(iii) improved techniques for making inventories of sources and sinks of greenhouse gases;(iv) developing techniques for national response strategies;(v) improving public information; and(vi) air quality assessment and air pollution mitigation strategies.

OBS

The Global Sea Level Observing System(GLOSS) is an international programme coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission(IOC) for the establishment of high quality global and regional sea level networks for application to climate, oceanographic and coastal sea level research. The programme became known as GLOSS as it provides data for deriving the ’Global Core Network’(GCN) of 287 sea level stations around the world for long term climate change and oceanographic sea level monitoring.

CONT

Volumes of ocean basins change, ridges expand, thereby displacing enough water to account for rises in seal level of 300 m(e. g. Cretaceous), as long as all ridges either expanded or contracted simultaneously around the world. However, the rate of sea level change that can result from this mechanism is slow and cannot account for the frequency of cycles or paracycles.
