The Olympic Games, or Olympics, are an international multi-sport event taking place every four years and comprising summer and winter games. Originally held in ancient Greece, they were revived by a French nobleman, Pierre Frèdy, Baron de Coubertin in the late 19th century. The Summer Olympics(Games of the Olympiad) have been held every fourth year starting in 1896, except in 1916, 1940, and 1944 due to the World Wars. A special edition for winter sports, the Olympic Winter Games, was first held in 1924. The first Winter Olympics competitions were originally held as a non-olympic sport festival, but were declared to be official games by the International Olympic Committee in 1925. Originally these were held in the same year as the Summer Olympics, but from 1994 on the Winter Games and the Summer Games have been held two years apart. 3, record 6, English, - Olympic%20Games

1, record 9, French, - Jeux%20Gais

Grooming is a word used to describe how people who want to sexually harm children and young people get close to them, and often their families, and gain their trust. Grooming in the real world can take place in all kinds of places – in the home or local neighbourhood, the child's school, youth and sports clubs or the church. Online grooming may occur by people forming relationships with children and pretending to be their friend. They do this by finding out information about their potential victim and trying to establish the likelihood of the child telling. They try to find out as much as they can about the child's family and social networks and, if they think it is "safe enough", will then try to isolate their victim and may use flattery and promises of gifts, or threats and intimidation in order to achieve some control. 2, record 16, English, - grooming

After 16 years, encompassing five Summer and one Winter Goodwill Games that included nearly 20, 000 athletes from 100 countries, dozens of world records and countless memories, the Goodwill Games have ceased operations. The brainchild of founder Ted Turner, the Goodwill Games began in 1986 in the host city of Moscow, Russia as a way to ease tensions during the Cold War through friendly athletic competition between nations. With the end of the Cold War, the Games’ focus shifted toward youth initiatives. Using sports as a way to better young peoples lives, the Goodwill Games raised millions of dollars for charity. 3, record 21, English, - Goodwill%20Games

The origins of most ice sports are understandably rooted in countries and regions of the world that have colder climates.... Most residents and natives of these areas have grown up with, and enjoy participating in ice sports such as broom ball, ice hockey, curling, figure skating, speed skating and ringette. However, these sports are also very popular in many other parts of the world with some of them such as curling, ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating, being Olympic sports. Most of these sports originated outdoors on frozen lakes, rivers and ponds many years ago and although they can still be enjoyed outdoors, they are now mainly played indoors from the comfort and warmth of luxurious ice arenas. 2, record 23, English, - ice%20sport

Hockey took its most important step forward in 1924 when the International Hockey Federation, the world governing body for the sport, was founded in Paris under the initiative of Frenchman, Paul Léautey. Mr. Léautey, who would become the first President of the FIH, was motivated to action following hockey's omission from the program of the 1924 Paris Games. Mr. Léautey called together representatives from seven national federations to form the sport's international governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon... The women's game developed quickly in many countries and in 1927, the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations(IFWHA) was formed.... After celebrating their respective Golden Jubilees-the FIH in 1974 and the IFWHA in 1980-the two organisations came together in 1982 to form the FIH. 3, record 30, English, - International%20Hockey%20Federation

Athletes enter as individuals rather than as national teams. Entries are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no selection requirements, no standards and no reserved places for top athletes. Unlimited entries are allowed in sports that aren’t facility-based, such as the marathon.
