On their journey from infant to adult, children pass through four planes of development. Each plane is characterized by a specific developmental goal and corresponding tendencies. The first plane, from 0-6 years old, is known as the plane of the absorbent mind. At this age children experience sensitive periods which assist them in formation of self and orientation with their world. Language acquisition, concern for order, attention to detail, locomotion and use of hands are all sensitive periods of first stage of development. 2, record 2, English, - absorbent%20mind

The Utopia Pavilion was one of the most noticed of the five theme pavilions at Portugal' s World Exhibition in Lisbon. For the first time at a World or Universal Exhibition, a show was staged for over 3 million spectators. It took co-author and artistic director François Confino three years during which he worked with American, Canadian, French and Portuguese staff to see this incredible challenge through. Soaring effects and gigantic special effects were specially designed, and extremely complex mechanical systems bred movement into flexible materials and stage sets at an unusually large scale. Through close collaboration with Philippe Genty, the director, Oceans & Utopias enticed the audience on a fascinating journey through mythology, conquest and the anguish of those at sea known to everyone faced with the boundlessness of the ocean. 1, record 11, English, - Utopia%20Pavilion

1, record 11, French, - Pavillon%20de%20l%27Utopie

The Canadian Lightning Detection Network(CLDN) helps meteorologists and scientists detect and monitor thunderstorms at an early stage in their development. Eighty-three sensors are set up across the country forming the Canadian portion of a North American network which is the largest of its kind in the world. The CLDN is able to detect more than 100 000 lightning flashes an hour. Within 40 seconds, the sensors determine the stregnth and location of lightning, send the information to Environment Canada's weather centres and then map out the information on a computer screen. 1, record 13, English, - Canadian%20Lightning%20Detection%20Network

1, record 13, French, - R%C3%A9seau%20canadien%20de%20d%C3%A9tection%20de%20la%20foudre

World exposition sanctioned by the International Bureau of Expositions, held in Vancouver 2 May-30 Oct. 1986. The theme, Transportation and Communication, celebrated the centenaires of the founding of Vancouver and the arrival on the Pacific coast of the first passenger train. Fifty-four governments and industries from six continents participated and there were over 22 million individual visits to the site. The commissioner general was Patrick Reid. Located along Vancouver's inner-city waterway, the 70 hectare site featured over 80 pavilions and many indoor and outdoor performance venues, including the Xerox International Theatre, a 1500-seat outdoor amphitheatre; The Big House, a 400-seat theatre of longhouse design; The Barn, a 300-seat proscenium theatre; and the Street of the Expo site on which a street festival took place throughout the exposition's run. The Canadian Pavilion, separate from the main site accessible to visitors by a four--minute ride on Vancouver's new Advanced Light Rapid Transit system, housed five performance spaces including a 500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, the 380-seat Amiga Studio(the exhibition's only enclosed theatre), and the 350-seat Inner Stage. 1, record 17, English, - Expo%2086

Jason Lanier is a virtual-reality performance artist. In his piece "The Sound of One Hand", which has played to packed theatres in Chicago, Toronto and Linz(Austria), he appears on stage framed by the image of a virtual world he enters when he dons special goggles and a DataGlove. His audience sees what he sees and what he does. His movements elicit eerie, tinkling notes from the computer-generated virtual instruments he is playing : a Cybersax, a CyberXylo and a Rhythm Gimbal. He is a star of an astoundingly energized new movement of musicians and visual artists who are defining and redefining their work through the use of cybertechnology. 1, record 26, English, - cyber%2Dartist

It has long been known that some components of wood are relatively easily hydrolyzed. The application of hydrolysis for the degradation of certain carbohydrates to low-molecular sugars is based on experience gained in the total hydrolysis of wood.... During the Second World War, a number of pulp mills were built in Germany designed to use deciduous woods or straw in an alkaline cook with a prehydrolysis. The hydrolyzates were processed for the production of fodder yeast. By this process, deciduous woods and straw were treated at 120° to 130°C with 0. 5% to 1% sulfuric acid and, in a second stage, with a conventional kraft cooking liquor(22% sulfidity) with a maximum cooking time and temperature of 3 hours and 165°C to produce pulps with a high [alpha]-cellulose content. 2, record 30, English, - prehydrolysis

[...] 3, record 30, French, - pr%C3%A9hydrolyse
