A vaccine that is composed of long chains of sugar molecules that resemble the surface of certain types of bacteria.

Licensed meningococcal vaccines are prepared from purified bacterial capsular polysaccharides, according to standard requirements(WHO [World Health Organization], 1976a). Products available are monovalent group A or C, bivalent A+C, or tetravalent A+C+Y+W135 polysaccharide vaccines.

OBS

Polysaccharide vaccines are available for pneumococcal disease, meningococcal disease and Haemophilus Influenzae type b.
