May 17. World Telecommunications Day 2005 marks two important anniversaries for ITU. It will be 140 years since we began helping the world communicate. From the birth of the telegraph, through radio and television broadcasting to satellite communications and the Internet, the work of ITU has helped harness the power of science and technology to fulfill a basic human need for communication. However, 20 years ago, we realized that not all people were sharing in the social and economic benefits that telecommunications creates.

Desde los albores del telégrafo y la radiodifusión sonora y de televisión hasta las comunicaciones por satélite e Internet, la labor de la UIT ha contribuido a encauzar las posibilidades que ofrece la ciencia y la tecnología para dar respuesta a una necesidad humana básica, es decir, la comunicación.

This network is known as the Overseas Fixed Telecommunications System(OFTS). The main hub is London, with nearly 100, 000 messages being received and transmitted each day from all parts of the world.
