World Youth Day(WYD) is an annual gathering of Catholic young people, created by Pope John Paul II in 1984 "to consolidate the ordinary youth ministry by offering new encouragement for commitment, objectives which foster ever greater involvement and participation"(Letter from Pope John Paul II-Seminar on WYD 1996). It is celebrated on a diocesan level annually, and at a week-long international level every two to three years at different locations, attracting hundreds of thousands of youths from almost every country on the planet.

La Journée mondiale de la jeunesse (JMJ) est un évènement organisé par l'Église catholique rassemblant des jeunes catholiques du monde entier. La Journée mondiale de la jeunesse a lieu en fait chaque année, elle est célébrée dans chaque diocèse du monde le Dimanche des Rameaux, avec généralement un petit rassemblement à Rome. Tous les deux ou trois ans, un grand rassemblement international a lieu, à l'invitation du pape, dans une ville différente, et dure alors plusieurs jours. Il s'achève par une messe présidée par le Souverain Pontife réunissant plusieurs centaines de milliers de participants.

The General Assembly on 17 December 1999 in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth(Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day. The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond, adopted by the General Assembly in 1995(resolution 50/81).

International Youth Day has been celebrated annually since 1999 as an occasion for focusing attention on the needs of all young people-defined by the United Nations to mean those aged between 10 and 24.
