World Youth Day(WYD) is an annual gathering of Catholic young people, created by Pope John Paul II in 1984 "to consolidate the ordinary youth ministry by offering new encouragement for commitment, objectives which foster ever greater involvement and participation"(Letter from Pope John Paul II-Seminar on WYD 1996). La Journée mondiale de la jeunesse (JMJ) est un évènement organisé par l'Église catholique rassemblant des jeunes catholiques du monde entier. La Journée mondiale de la jeunesse a lieu en fait chaque année, elle est célébrée dans chaque diocèse du monde le Dimanche des Rameaux, avec généralement un petit rassemblement à Rome. Tous les deux ou trois ans, un grand rassemblement international a lieu, à l'invitation du pape, dans une ville différente, et dure alors plusieurs jours. The General Assembly on 17 December 1999 in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth(Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
