WOW FLUTTER [4 records]

Record 1 2013-03-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Audio Technology
CONT

Speed variations up to 10 Hz are called "wow", and speed variations above 10 Hz are considered "flutter".

CONT

The term "flutter" usually refers to relatively high cyclic [sound speed] deviations..., and the term "wow" to relatively low ones(for example, a variation of once per turntable revolution).

OBS

"Once-arounds" refers particularly to deviations occurring once per revolution on a turntable. "Wow" is more generic and could refer to deviations occurring on tape as well.

Key term(s)
  • once-around

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

OBS

pleurage : terme normalisé par l'AFNOR.

Record 2 2012-03-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Audio Technology
DEF

Undesired form of frequency modulation introduced into the signal by an irregular motion of the recording medium during the recording/reproducing process, usually at frequencies above 10 cycles per second.

OBS

In this sense "flutter" refers to relatively high cyclic deviations(10 hertz or more) and is contrasted with "wow".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électroacoustique
DEF

OBS

scintillement : terme normalisé par l'AFNOR.

English

Subject field(s)

CONT

No capstan drive system is perfect and... this will give rise to tape speed variations that affect the playback quality of music.... Such speed changes are called wow and flutter.

CONT

Flutter is any deviation in frequency in reproduced sound from the original frequency: it usually results from nonuniform motion of the recording medium during recording, duplication or reproduction.

OBS

While the term "flutter" is normally limited to designating higher rates of speed variation, it is often generalized to include both wow and(high speed) flutter, as in TRAUD, 1969, p. 656. In addition, "speed variations" or "flutter"(in the generalized sense) could be used to refer to "drift", which is "a random rate close to zero hertz"(cf. GRAEL, 1977, p. 284).

OBS

flutter: Term standardized by the USA Standards Institute.

Key term(s)
  • wow and flutter

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électroacoustique
DEF

DEF

A recurring speed variation of relatively low frequency in a moving medium.

OBS

Wow refers to slow speeds and flutter to high speeds.
