WRENCH FAULT [3 records]

Record 1 2010-12-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
DEF

A ... strike-slip fault in which the fault surface is vertical, and the fault blocks move sideways past each other.

OBS

Given the geological complexity of some deformed rocks, including rocks that have experienced more than one episode of deformation, it can be difficult to distinguish a wrench fault from a strike-slip fault. Also, areas can be deformed more than once or experience ongoing structuring such that fault surfaces can be rotated from their original orientations.

OBS

This complexity explains that the term "wrench fault" has been used with an increasing frequency as a synonym of transcurrent or strike-slip fault.

OBS

wrench fault : term used at Natural Resources Canada-Earth Sciences Sector.

Record 2 2007-07-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
CONT

Entrapped hydrocarbons, as well as the reservoir facies trends and hydrocarbon migration pathways are influenced by PreCambrian wrench fault systems present in basins throughout the Rockies.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
CONT

Record 3 2006-11-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
DEF

A very steep fault associated with a low angle over thrust fault.

CONT

The east-west-oriented segment of the Cape Ray Fault Zone is a tear fault that accommodated differential displacement along the length of the fault.

OBS

The term "tear fault" can be used to indicate a steeply-dipping wrench fault that bounds or cuts the hanging wall of a thrust or normal fault...

OBS

tear fault: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique
CONT
