Techniques of recording. The pupils are well dilated and the patient sits in front of the camera with one arm outstretched. Twenty-five milligrams of ICG [indocyanine green] dye is dissolved in 0.5 ml [millilitres] of the manufacturers aqueous solvent and given intravenously as a bolus followed by a 5 ml physiological saline solution flush. The flush eliminates the need for image intensification. Preferably 10 images should be obtained starting immediately after injection and lasting the first 30 seconds. ... CONT

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive technique that can detect blood flow signal in retinal and choroidal vessels using motion contrast. It compares the decorrelation signal (differences in the backscattered OCT [optical coherence tomography] signal intensity) between sequential OCT B-scans taken at the same cross-section; thus, yielding maps of vascular flow. ... Numerous studies described how to automatically detect and classify retinal disorders (e.g., diabetic retinopathy [DR]). However, most of them relied on fundus images rather than on OCT images or OCT angiograms. Recent development in OCTA induced attempts to use advanced image processing in order to extract quantitative information that characterizes the vascular network in the retina from the angiograms.

Angiograms are taken after the injection of a dye in the patient’s arm to enhance the appearance of blood vessels, under a specific illumination and filter. The dye has an absorption peak, which determines the illumination light, and an emission peak, which determines the filter that retains only the fluorescent contribution. ... High brightness, short pulse width(<200 picoseconds) x-ray lasers now offer biologists the possibility of high-resolution imaging of specimens in an aqueous environment without the blurring effects associated with natural motion or chemical erosion. As a step toward developing the capabilities of this type of x-ray microscopy, a tantalum x-ray laser at a 44. 83-angstrom wavelength was used together with an x-ray zone plate optic to image both unlabeled and selectively gold-labeled dried rat sperm nuclei. In the image, 500-angstrom features are clearly visible. This illustrates the importance of x-ray microscopy in determining chemical composition. X-ray microscopy also provides information about the uniformity of sperm chromatin organization and the extent of sperm chromatin hydration.

A form of x-ray which creates cross-sectional images. X-ray beams pass through the body at different angles and are then recorded by detectors and channeled into a computer which produces cross-sectional views at different planes.

OBS

As the x-ray tube and detector make this 360° rotation, the detector takes numerous snapshots(called profiles) of the attenuated x-ray beam. Typically, in one 360° lap, about 1, 000 profiles are sampled. Each profile is subdivided spatially(divided into partitions) by the detectors and fed into about 700 individual channels. Each profile is then backwards reconstructed(or "back projected") by a dedicated computer into a two-dimensional image of the "slice" that was scanned.

Figure 1... shows the principle of laminography, a synchronized motion between an X-ray source and a detector generating an geometric focus plane and forms an X-ray slice image of that. Objects in the focal plane are always projected at the same position of the detector. On the other hand, those that are not in the focal plane are projected to other positions of the detector and thus are blurred as the source and detector move in a complete circle.
