The light is made of particles(photons) but is also a wave. Its properties depend on its wavelength : longer waves are less energetic than shorter waves--photons with long wavelength have less energy than short-wavelength photons. Therefore, there are different kinds of electromagnetic radiation : infrared, radio waves, microwaves, gamma rays, X rays, etc. Only a small fraction can be detected by the human eye : the visible light--what in everyday-life is referred to simply as ’light’. The human eye cannot detect wavelengths larger than those of the visible light, such as those of infrared light, microwaves(wavelengths of centimetres), or radio waves(wavelength sofmetres). Wavelengths shorter than visible light cannot be seen either : ultraviolet light, X-rays, gamma rays(the most energetic). 3, record 32, English, - light

2, record 32, French, - lumi%C3%A8re

In scanning electron microscopy(SEM), a fine probe of electrons with energies typically up to 40 keV [kiloelectron volts] is focused on a specimen, and scanned along a pattern of parallel lines. Various signals are generated as a result of the impact of the incident electrons, which are collected to form an image or to analyse the sample surface. These are mainly secondary electrons, with energies of a few tens of eV [electron volts], high-energy electrons backscattered from the primary beam and characteristic X-rays. 5, record 44, English, - scanning%20electron%20microscopy

Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution. 3, record 46, English, - scanning%20transmission%20electron%20microscopy

The word radiation is commonly used in several distinct although related senses. First, it is a term for the process by which energy is transferred and is able to exert an effect at a distance without the need for any physical connection between source and receiver. In this broad sense, radiation includes energy transfer both by electromagnetic waves (as in the case of gamma rays, ultra-violet rays or radio waves) and by energetic particles (such as alpha or beta particles emitted from nuclei in the process of radioactive decay). The more precise terms "electromagnetic radiation" and "particulate radiation" differentiate between these two phenomena. 4, record 64, English, - electromagnetic%20radiation

Escape peak form, as in gas-flow detectors, when an incoming X-ray produces a characteristic X-ray from the detector material. These X-rays are produced near the surface of the detector crystal and if they are reabsorbed there is no problem. If, however, the X-ray "escapes" the detector, an escape peak is produced. The escape peaks in a Si(Li) detector are 1. 74 keV lower in energy that the incident X-rays(Ec for Si-Ka). Escape peaks will be present for all parent peaks above 1. 84 keV(the Si absorption edge), and their magnitudes are usually a few percent of the parent peak. 1, record 71, English, - escape%20peak

[A] refractive x-ray optics(lenses that transmit and focus x-rays over a particular energy range) offers an inexpensive and much simpler alternative. Our project investigates using refractive lenses to focus soft x-rays in the few kiloelectronvolt to few tens of kiloelectronvolt energy range. Because the x-ray refraction effect is quite weak in a single lens, a series of elements — a compound refractive lens(CRL) — focuses soft x-rays over practical focal lengths, typically 1 m to 2 m. 1, record 82, English, - compound%20refractive%20lens

Kyphoplasty is a newer treatment for patients immobilized by the painful vertebral body compression fractures associated with osteoporosis. Like vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can alleviate up to 90% of the pain caused by compression fractures. In addition to relieving pain, kyphoplasty can also stabilize the fracture, restore height, and reduce deformity.... Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. Using image guidance x-rays, two small incisions are made and a probe is placed into the vertebral space where the fracture is located. The bone is drilled and a balloon, called a bone tamp, is inserted on each side. These balloons are then inflated with contrast medium(to be seen using image guidance x-rays) until they expand to the desired height and removed. The balloon does not remain in the patient. It simply creates a cavity for the cement and also helps expand the compressed bone. The spaces created by the balloons are then filled with PMMA [poly(methyl methacrylate) ], the same orthopaedic cement used in vertebroplasty, binding the fracture. The cement hardens quickly, providing strength and stability to the vertebra, restoring height, and relieving pain. 1, record 83, English, - kyphoplasty

1, record 83, French, - cyphoplastie

Grenz rays are a form of black light. In 1895, the German physicist, Wilhelm Roentgen was studying the fluorescence produced by cathode rays(electrons) when he discovered a form of highly penetrating radiation which he termed "x-rays". Through subsequent experiments, he and other researchers demonstrated that these x-rays possessed the ability to penetrate matter differentially, as a function of density and elemental composition. This led promptly to the widespread application of x-rays for observing the internal structure of various objects, including the human body. 2, record 91, English, - highly%20penetrating%20radiation

2, record 92, French, - dose%20dans%20l%27air

An X-ray tube providing rectification of the high voltage by itself. 1, record 93, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
Record number: 93, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This is accomplished when an X-ray tube is connected directly to the secondary windings of the high voltage transformer without any intervening rectifier. When the cathode is negative with respect to the anode, electrons will flow from the cathode filament to the anode and produce X-rays. During the next half of the electrical cycle, the anode is negative with respect to the cathode, and electrons could flow in the opposite direction. However, as long as the anode is kept cool, no electrons will be emitted from the anode, and no current will flow. The result is that of half wave rectification, where only half of the cycle of the high-voltage current is used to produce X-rays. 1, record 93, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
Record number: 93, Textual support number: 2 OBS
An obvious disadvantage of self-rectification, as opposed to supplying the X-ray tube with an already rectified direct current, is that exposure times must be increased since X-ray production occurs during only half of the time the current is applied. Secondly, repeated exposures could heat the anode to such an extent that electrons are also emitted from the anode. This could result in a reverse flow of electrons in the X-ray tube with excessive heating and destruction of the filament. 1, record 93, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
