X-WING [7 records]

CONT

The three emerging aircraft are the Sikorsky Advancing Blade Concept, more usually called simply ABC, the Bell tilt-rotor and the X-wing stopped-rotor arrangement. The last-named emerged from the original work on circulation-controlled rotors done in the British National Gas Turbine Establishment early in the 1960s, taken up by the US David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center, tested in practice by Kaman in the XH-2/CCR adaptation of an SH-2D Sprite

The X-wing has emerged from the circulation controlled rotor(CCR) in which a hollow blade of roughly oval aerofoil section, that is, without a real lifting profile at all, can be made to lift effectively by blowing a layer of air through a slot and across the curved Coanda surface which forms the trailing-edge. While this in itself produces lift, the air jet can be so modulated as the rotor turns that it has the same effect as the cyclic pitch changing of the normal rotor. Finally, a further jet can be blown through a second slot near the leading-edge of the blade so that it restores the lost lift of the retreating blade. This fore-and-aft blowing is the key to the stopped-rotor X-wing.

A series of technical breakthroughs have come together to make the machine possible, including composite blade structures, air compressors, the pneumodynamic control system for distributing air to the Coanda-effect slots at each edge of each blade and, not least, the quadruplex digital vehicle management system, without which the X-Wing could not be made to operate.

An X-Wing aircraft should eventually be able to fly at Harrier speeds with its rotor stopped, propelling itself with the thrust of its compound powerplants....

The X-wing is relatively early in practical development in the sense that the rotor-stopping operation has not yet been repeatedly demonstrated in flight, though it has been achieved in the big NASA Ames full-scale wind tunnel.
