Studies on the physiology of flowering revealed that the wax flower is an absolute short-day plant under conditions of mild temperatures. At very high and very low temperatures no flowers are produced. At medium-low temperature some flowers are formed regardless of photoperiod. To advance flowering in the autumn, plants of several cultivars are covered in the field at the end of the summer to create artificial short days.

On distingue les plantes nyctipériodiques «préférantes» (leur floraison est seulement favorisée par les jours courts) et les plantes nyctipériodiques «absolues» qui, pour fleurir, ont absolument besoin de nuits longues (certains chrysanthèmes).

Les plantes de jours courts, ou plutôt de nuits longues, sont des «nyctipériodiques». Là encore, on trouve des «n.» préférantes (comme le soya, variété «Biloxi»), et des «n.» absolues (comme le tabac «Maryland Mammoth», objet des premières expériences de W. W. GARNER et H. A. ALLARD), qu'il est impossible de faire fleurir en jours longs. Selon P. CHOUARD, la majorité des espèces tropicales appartiennent à cette seconde catégorie. Le jour court est, ici, voisin de 12 heures.

OBS

Les plantes de jour court, ou nyctipériodiques : qui ne fleurissent qu'après des périodes d'obscurité supérieures à un seuil; le chanvre, la canne à sucre par exemple sont nyctipériodiques obligatoires alors que le chrysanthème est seulement préférant.
