Record 1 2016-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
  • Botany
DEF

Applied to plants which appear to have the ability to restrict water loss during adverse conditions ...

OBS

"Xeromorph" is now used to describe any plant that has any of the characteristics listed by Warming as xeromorphic characters, [a well-developed coating of hairs; protected stomates; wax; thick cuticle; sclerophylly... ;mucilage; ericoid leaves like the heathers, or leaves reduced to stiff spines, or leafless(aphyllous) stems], irrespective of their function.... A xerophyte is any plant that grows in a dry habitat. When [defined] in this way, we soon find that there are xerophytes that are not xeromorphs, and vice versa.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
CONT

Many plants occurring in dry regions or in wetter regions on soils of low fertility or high salinity exhibit xeromorphic features including small hard leaves, thick cuticles, sunken stomates, hairiness, rolled leaves and in some cases succulence... Xeromorphism is also seen in alpine plants so it appears to be a response to one or a combination of environmental extremes,... reduced water supply or low fertility or both.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale
DEF
