L'huile d'onagre est extraite des graines de l'onagre (Oenothera biennis), une grande plante bisannuelle qui est indigène en Amérique du Nord. L'huile d'onagre est riche en acide gamma-linolénique (AGL), une substance qui contribue à de nombreuses fonctions essentielles dans l'organisme. D'ordinaire, l'AGL est créé dans l'organisme lors de la dégradation des acides gras oméga-6. Les acides gras oméga-3 et oméga-6 sont des acides gras essentiels. Ces derniers doivent - d'où le terme essentiel - faire partie de l'alimentation parce que l'organisme humain n'est pas capable de les fabriquer.
