Ils interviennent, d'une façon générale, lorsque l'enclenchement mécanique vient à cesser après remise en position normale du levier du signal commandant le passage, (le mécanicien a alors franchi le signal et le train n'a pas encore dégagé le passage). Dans ce cas, l'enclenchement électrique correspondant est déjà rentré en action pour faire persister l'interdiction de manœuvre du levier si les conditions de changement de position de l'organe sur le terrain ne sont pas réalisées.
