Ikat is one of the most complicated approaches to dyeing... Some sections of the yarn to be used in weaving are knotted or covered with an impermeable material and then the yarn is dyed. The dye does not penetrate these sections, so the different sections of yarn display different colors.

Skein dyeing is one of the most expensive yarn dyeing methods. It is the process of immersing large skeins of yarns that are loosely wound, into dye vats which are designed especially for this purpose. Soft yarns like hand-knitting yarns are usually skein-dyed.

Color space-dyeing is a form of yarn dyeing which is again coming into use. It is an ancient craft to which different local names, such as tie-dyeing, have been applied. It refers to the coloring of yarns at intervals spaced along the yarn length.... this form of dyeing arose spontaneously and became a part of the textile craft tradition. In many places, tie-dyeing methods were the only ones used to create pattern in a fabric. The Japanese, for instance until fairly recently used tie-dyed yarns for the warp and weft of fabrics to produce a diversity of interesting and popular designs.... Developments in technique.... mechanized methods have replaced the ancient laborious ones of applying color space-dyeing.

CONT

Horizontal spindle machines may be rectangular in design, similar to hank dyeing machines, but modified to take frames, onto which yarn packages are inserted horizontally, or alternatively may be a horizontal autoclave into which is wheeled the carrier containing the yarn packages. Both types operate with high flow rate pumps, which are necessary to give good circulation of the dye liquor. These machines are usually used for bulky yarns, which are wound onto soft packages, again to increase dye liquor penetration.

DEF

Cloths, irrespective of color, that have been woven in a loom, but have received no dry- or wet-finishing operations.

CONT

Count, which is the fourth element in woven fabric construction, is the number of yarns per inch of fabric. It is a vital consideration in the construction of woven fabrics because it affects absorbency, adhesion, permeability, strength, weight, bulk, flexibility, and other fabric characteristics. The "gray" or unfinished fabric count, however, may be misleading because of dimensional changes due to finishing or to tension and other factors in subsequent processing. Because good looks are not generally a requirement for industrial fabrics, many fabrics are used "in the gray" --without any finishing process.

OBS
