The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002...

Class IB nuclear facility means any of the following nuclear facilities :(a) a particle accelerator with a beam energy equal to or greater than 50 MeV;(b) a plant for the processing of an isotope of uranium, reprocessing of an isotope of uranium or separation of an isotope of uranium, thorium or plutonium;(c) a plant for the manufacture of a product from uranium, thorium or plutonium;(d) a plant, other than a Class II nuclear facility as defined in section 1 of the Class II Nuclear Facilities and Prescribed Equipment Regulations, for the processing or use, in a quantity greater than 1015 Bq per calendar year, of nuclear substances other than uranium, thorium or plutonium;(e) a facility for the disposal of a nuclear substance generated at another nuclear facility; and(f) a facility prescribed by paragraph 19(a) or(b) of the General Nuclear Safety and Control Regulations.

Developed by California Sea Grant researchers, a unique class of marine compounds generated $686, 000 in royalties last year and over a million dollars to date, placing them among the university's top ten royalty-producing inventions. The compounds, a closely related group called pseudopterosins, are extracted from a creature called the Caribbean sea whip. They have been licensed to two companies for very different purposes. For medical use as anti-inflammatory drugs, pseudopterosins have been licensed to a small pharmaceutical firm. The company has completed preclinical tests of one pseudopterosin, a potent topical anti-inflammatory compound, and filed an investigational new drug application with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. It is expected that clinical trials on human subjects will focus on the drug's potential as therapy for irritant contact dermatitis.

Generally, CCA deductions begin when an asset is acquired, with half the normal write-off allowed in the year of acquisition. Assets are pooled in a class and taxpayers are allowed to claim up to the maximum CCA specified by the tax rules. Most CCA rates are established on a declining balance basis, which means that the allowed percentage write-off for each class of property is calculated for any year by reference to the remaining unclaimed balance in the class at the end of that year.
