The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 6, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

Police statistics on crime were first published in Canada in 1921 as a section of Criminal Statistics, 1920. These statistics were provided in the early years by only a small and incomplete number of municipal police forces. Over the ensuing four decades, there was a gradual increase in the number of police forces reporting and in the detail of the figures they reported. These statistics did not at all provide a full picture of crime or law enforcement in Canada, and were not comparable from year to year until 1 January 1962, when the Uniform Crime Reporting(UCR) System commenced. This system was developed by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in concert with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Committee on the Uniform Recording of Police Statistics. The UCR system was designed to provide more complete, accurate, and standardized(comparable) statistics on crime and police activity in Canada than had previously been possible. 1, record 13, English, - Uniform%20Crime%20Reporting%20System

1, record 13, French, - Syst%C3%A8me%20de%20d%C3%A9claration%20uniforme%20de%20la%20criminalit%C3%A9

The relative lack of wetlands and presence of permafrost means that there is only a limited area and depth in which melt-water can be stored, so that the spring melt-water typically runs quickly off the land rather than soaking into the ground and being released slowly over a long time period. Real prices are those that have been adjusted to remove the effect of changes in the purchasing power of the dollar; they usually reflect buying power relative to a reference year. Prior to 1996, real prices were expressed in constant dollars, a measure based on the weights of goods and services in a single year, usually a recent year. In 1996, the U. S. [United States] Department of Commerce introduced the chained-dollar measure. The new measure is based on the average weights of goods and services in successive pairs of years. It is "chained" because the second year in each pair, with its weights, becomes the first year of the next pair. The advantage of using the chained-dollar measure is that it is more closely related to any given period covered and is subject to less distortion over time. 3, record 51, English, - chained%20dollar

Holland's most famous exported cheese is Gouda, with its characteristic yellow interior dotted with a few tiny holes. It has a mild, nutlike flavour that is very similar to edam, but its texture is slightly creamier due to its higher milk fat content(about 48 percent compared to Edam's 40 percent). Gouda can be made from whole or part-skim cow's milk, and aged anywhere from a few weeks to over a year. The younger the Gouda, the milder the flavour. 3, record 65, English, - Gouda%20cheese

To distinguish it from the QALY they have named their new measure the healthy year equivalent(HYE). It involves the valuation of whole health profiles, which vary in terms of the sequence and duration of health states. A weekly or other periodic tenancy is a tenancy by the week or the period, and does not expire without notice at the end of the first week or period or at the end of each succeeding week or period, there being not a reletting at the beginning of every week or period but a springing interest which arises and which is only determined by a proper notice to quit. The period upon which a tenancy is based may be ascertained mainly by reference to the way in which the rent is calculated; thus, where the rent reserved is so much per year, a yearly tenancy will be implied, even though the rent is payable monthly. There is a distinction between a monthly or quarterly rent and monthly or quarterly instalments of a yearly rent; and accordingly, where a tenant for a fixed-term at a weekly rent holds over and continues to pay the same weekly rent, the proper inference is that a weekly tenancy was intended.(Evans, 1974, p. 32). 1, record 78, English, - weekly%20tenancy

A method of distributing players within a draw so that the best players do not meet in early rounds. The number of seeds is governed by the rules and in a draw of 32 places must not exceed 8. Numbering the positions 1 to 32, the seeds are placed according to their estimated ability (1-8) to meet in the third round thus: 1 vs 8, 6 vs 3, 4 vs 5, 7 vs 2. 2, record 99, English, - seeding

Tennis players are given points based on their performances over the last twelve months(the process is called "ranking"). The ratings are issued three times a year and are used by organizing committees to determine the seeds for an ATP-sanctioned tournament and the players that are to be admitted to the draw if there are more entries than positions(the process is called "seeding"). The top seeds(8 in a draw of 32, 16 in a draw of 128) are positioned on the draw(or board), the first two(No. 1 seed, No. 2 seed) being located at opposite ends of the draw and others, placed in positions specified by tournament regulations. The other seeded players(24 in a draw of 32, 112 in a draw of 128) are usually subject to draw(their names are drawn blindly from a cup) and registered on the official draw sheet indicating who opposes whom. The process allows for unseeded players to fill the final entries and intends to have a match between the best two players in the final. 4, record 99, English, - seeding
