YEAR RING [4 records]

Record 1 2013-04-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Combat Sports (General)
CONT

The sumo ring is called the dohyo and takes its name from the straw rice bag which mark out its different parts. The greater portion of each bale is firmly buried in the earth. The dohyo is 18 feet square and 2 feet high and is constructed of a special kind of clay. The hard surface is covered with a thin layer of sand. The bout is confined to an inner circle a little over 15 feet in diameter. Over the dohyo suspended from the ceiling by cables is a roof resembling a Shinto shrine with four giant tassels hanging from each corner to signify the seasons of the year.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
CONT

When water seeps into the cracks in limestone gravel and freezes, it starts to sort the gravel. The larger pieces are sorted from the smaller pieces. This process continues year after year, frost after frost, until a frost polygon or stone stripes eventually form. Frost polygons are circles of gravel with the larger pieces sorted to the outside, forming a ring, and the smaller pieces on the inside. They are often mistaken for human-made structures such as tent rings and crop circles, however they are natural.

OBS

For the term "bulk BRT screening test", "bulk" means that the test is performed on the milk mixture that has been stored in a refrigerated container.

CONT

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Silviculture
  • Chronology
DEF

The synchronisation of two ring patterns by means of a good visual agreement backed by a sound statistical test of significance, for the purpose of chronology building, comparison of chronologies, or dating.

CONT

The process of comparing the patterns of wide and narrow annual rings in one tree with those in another is called cross-dating and is the fundamental basis of dendrochronology.

CONT

Cross-dating means the synchronisation of two ring patterns by means of a good visual agreement backed by a sound statistical test of significance.

CONT

Any dendrochronological study involves the establishment of cross-correlations between ring patterns. This is true for chronology extension, dating against floating, or standard chronologies and comparison of chronologies from different areas.... Figure 2 shows a cross-correlation established on the basis of a signature pattern occurring in each of three Irish oak samples. The wide signature ring for the year A. D. 1580 is indicated in each case.

  • Chronologie
DEF
