A chemical product which appears under the form of odorless crystals and which was used during World War 1 as an antipersonnel device to generate a smoke causing sneezing and vomiting.

CONT

DA is an abbreviation for Di-phenyl-chlor-arsine, a nose irritant gas used during the Second World War. It has no smell and a delayed action, but causes sneezing, a burning pain in the chest, nose, throat and mouth after a few minutes.

OBS

Clark agents. ... these super agents are ... named after the German term "ChLorierte" [chlorinated] "ARsen" [arsenic] "Kampfstoffe" [chemical agents]. As the name suggests, they contain chlorine and arsenic. Clark I is diphenylchloroarsine and Clark II is diphenylcyanoarsine. They are powerful vomiting agents which could penetrate the early designs of gas mask and force the soldiers to remove them, exposing them to the more dangerous agents such as chlorine gas.

OBS

[Origin of the name "blue cross :"] With German shells, the type of chemical agent can be identified from coloured crosses on the casings :"Blaukreuz"(blue cross) affects the upper respiratory tract; "Weisskreuz"(white) contain irritants affecting the eyes and other moist tissues; "Grünkreuz"(green) affects the lungs; "Gelbkreuz"(yellow) attacks any exposed skin surfaces.

... CR... Newer riot control irritant developed in England in 1962 by the British chemists Higginbottom and Suchitzsky. About 5 times more effective than CS [and] much less toxic than CS. CR is not used in its pure form(a yellow powder) but dissolved in a solution of 80 parts of propylene glycol and 20 parts of water to form a 0. 1-percent CR solution. It is used in solution as a riot control agent. Eye pain, discomfort and excessive tearing occur with sometimes painful sensitivity to strong light or temporary blindness. Symptoms can persist for 15 to 30 minutes. Dubbed "fire gas" by the media because of the burning sensation it caused to the skin of rioters when used in Northern Ireland from 1973-1974. Authorized U. S. Army use in 1974.

CONT

CR gas or dibenzoxazepine... is an incapacitating agent and a lachrymatory agent.... CR is a pale yellow crystalline solid with a pepper-like odour. It is slightly soluble in water and does not degrade in it. CR is usually presented as a microparticulate solid, in the form of suspension in a propylene glycol based liquid. Contrary to its common name, it is not actually a gas but is solid at room temperature.

A treatment, most often SO2, but in some cases H2SO4 or HCl, applied a) After a final chlorine dioxide, hyprochlorite or peroxide stage to destroy residual bleaching agent and remove metal ions which prevents brightness loss and avoids fibre degradation, and to create a pH favourable for brightness stability(alkaline pulps tend to yellow on exposure to light and air) ;b) As a pretreatment before an oxygen stage, which tends to improve both brightness and physical strength, probably by removing metal ions from pulp; and c) Between stages, such as peroxide-hydrosulphite, to eliminate the washing steps by creating acid conditions necessary for the hydrosulphite stage, and to destroy residual peroxide by reduction which would otherwise consume costly hydrosulphite; d) Has been used in place of a chelation stage in a TCF sequence with peroxide. In this application the PH is very important.
