This insect, common in Great-Britain and Canada’s West Coast, is an omnivorous scavenger of cereal screenings, dust, etc. Occasionally it is a major pest of bulk wheat, bagged flour and a variety of stored commodities. In the home it is much more important as a clothes moth than as a pest of stored foods. 1, record 6, English, - brown%20house%20moth
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The adults vary in size with the male having a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres, while the female may at times exceed 2. 5 centimetres. The forewings are dark brown with a number of blackish-brown spots. Approximately 300 eggs are laid by each female, most of them within a few days of mating. Three times as many eggs are laid on sacking as on grain. The mature larva is about 2 centimetres in length, shiny white in colour, with a yellow head. The feeding larva spins a light, closely-woven tube of silk as it eats its way through a food mass. When temperatures are too low, many of the larvae become dormant rather than pupate, extending the larval stage. High relative humidity is a requirement for satisfactory larval growth. At summer temperatures and a relative humidity of approximately 90% the life cycle takes about 100 days. 1, record 6, English, - brown%20house%20moth

1, record 6, French, - %26oelig%3Bcophore%20bronz%C3%A9e
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
1, record 6, French, - %26oelig%3Bcophore%20bronz%C3%A9e

Often this name is abbreviated (e.g. C.) However, since this element is not terminologically significant, it may be left out. 2, record 12, English, - zebra%20swallowtail

Rusty tussock moth.... Larvae attack all conifer seedling species.... These gregarious caterpillars completely denude a seedling before moving on to the next, and can occur in patches of 5-100 styroblocks.... The adult male is rusty-brown with a white dot and light brown band on each forewing. The female is flightless, sedentary, with light tan hairs covering the body. The population overwinters as white egg masses which can be cemented to the sides and bottoms of styroblocks. They will adhere to the blocks after seedlings have been lifted and blocks washed and stored. Because the eggs are white, they often go unnoticed. Larvae emerge from these egg masses(often on styroblocks) around May, and actively feed on newly emerged seedlings. They are hairy, up to 28 mm long, have two black hair "pencils" projecting forward and one to the rear, four golden brushes of hair on the back, accompanied by eight warty protuberances with yellow and black hairs on each segment. 4, record 16, English, - rusty%20tussock%20moth

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." Furthermore, the prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-" should not be used anymore, and their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-," and "p-") will soon be judged to be avoided, if not totally condemned. 5, record 41, English, - 2%2Dmethylaniline

6, record 46, French, - longueur%20d%27onde%20de%20la%20lumi%C3%A8re

... CR... Newer riot control irritant developed in England in 1962 by the British chemists Higginbottom and Suchitzsky. About 5 times more effective than CS [and] much less toxic than CS. CR is not used in its pure form(a yellow powder) but dissolved in a solution of 80 parts of propylene glycol and 20 parts of water to form a 0. 1-percent CR solution. It is used in solution as a riot control agent. Eye pain, discomfort and excessive tearing occur with sometimes painful sensitivity to strong light or temporary blindness. Symptoms can persist for 15 to 30 minutes. Dubbed "fire gas" by the media because of the burning sensation it caused to the skin of rioters when used in Northern Ireland from 1973-1974. Authorized U. S. Army use in 1974. 3, record 57, English, - CR%20gas

Yellow Sigatoka. The first symptom of the disease is the appearance of yellow-green specks in the lower surface of the third and fourth youngest open leaf. The specks elongate and expand into clearly visible brown streaks. As the streaks further increase in size, they become elliptical brown spots surrounded by a yellow halo that separate the spot from the normal green leaf tissue. When the spots become fully developed, the central areas turn gray, which eventually are surrounded by dark brown or black margin with yellow halo. The spots group together to form large areas of light brown, dried-up leaf tissues. This leads to premature dying of the leaves. 4, record 62, English, - yellow%20Sigatoka

Synthetic diamond. A man-made diamond, produced either by subjecting carbon-bearing material such as graphite to high temperature and pressure or by the chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method. The Swedish company Allmana Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget(ASEA) is believed to have achieved the first repeatable synthesis of diamond in 1953, but their results were not published at the time; General Electric Company(GE) announced a successful synthesis of diamonds in 1954, followed by De Beers in 1959. Colors range from black to dark green, light green, red, yellow, blue, and colorless(Type IIa diamonds). Millions of carats of industrial-quality synthetic diamond are now manufactured annually using high pressure techniques; gem quality synthetic diamonds have been produced experimentally by De Beers Diamond Research Laboratories, General Electric Company... 3, record 68, English, - synthetic%20diamond

In the chromogenic processes, three selectively light sensitive layers in the silver halide emulsion are exposed to light. Initially, a black and white, silver halide, latent image is chemically developed to form a negative on all three layers. During this stage, the developer used to convert the exposed silver halide to metallic silver becomes oxidized. The oxidized developer combines with color couplers initiating the selective formation of cyan, magenta and yellow dyes within discrete layers of the emulsion. The image silver is then bleached and unexposed silver halide is removed by fixing. 3, record 72, English, - image%20silver

When the sun sets, sometimes the last bit of light from the disk itself is an emerald green. The same is true of the first bit of light from the rising sun. This phenomenon is known as the "green flash" or "green ray". It is not an optical illusion. The green flash is common and will be visible any time the sun is rises or sets on a "clear", "unobstructed", and "low" horizon.... The explanation for the green flash is thus, 1) refraction separates the solar images by color; 2) at just the right instant, the red image has set, 3) the yellow image is absorbed; and 4) the blue image is scattered away. We are left with the upper limb of the green image. Because the green flash is primarily a refraction effect, it lasts longer and is easier to see from a mountain top than from sea level. 3, record 76, English, - green%20flash

3, record 76, French, - rayon%20vert

It is classed among the greatest French cheeses and even protected by the strict Appellation Controlee laws to prevent frauds. Crottin de Chavignol is a small cheese, weighing between 5 and 2 oz, depending on the age. The cheese starts as a very white cheese and then turns yellow with a light blue mold and eventually brown(which is rarely seen in this country). As the cheese ages, it becomes increasingly sharp and pungent. Even when young though, it does not lack flavor. 2, record 82, English, - Crottin%20de%20Chavignol

Findings of the N. C. A. T. Of the eight samples presented, five bear a label claiming to be Crookes Glass. Only two of these possess any physical properties that are similar to the genuine Crookes lens, and even these differ in some fundamental ways. The remaining three, so marked, transmit the same proportion of U. V. as ordinary white spectacle glass. The Chance Crookes lens series sharply reduce the yellow light that you see. Of all colours, yellow is the most dazzling. None of the tested glasses show even a hint of this quality. It is quite clear that the mere label "Crookes", attached to a pair of sunglasses, is valueless unless the seller can guarantee the quality of the lenses they contain. 2, record 89, English, - Crookes%20glass

A treatment, most often SO2, but in some cases H2SO4 or HCl, applied a) After a final chlorine dioxide, hyprochlorite or peroxide stage to destroy residual bleaching agent and remove metal ions which prevents brightness loss and avoids fibre degradation, and to create a pH favourable for brightness stability(alkaline pulps tend to yellow on exposure to light and air) ;b) As a pretreatment before an oxygen stage, which tends to improve both brightness and physical strength, probably by removing metal ions from pulp; and c) Between stages, such as peroxide-hydrosulphite, to eliminate the washing steps by creating acid conditions necessary for the hydrosulphite stage, and to destroy residual peroxide by reduction which would otherwise consume costly hydrosulphite; d) Has been used in place of a chelation stage in a TCF sequence with peroxide. 1, record 92, French, - traitement%20%C3%A0%20l%27acide

The boreal forest is divided into two great transcontinental belts of approximately equal size : the subarctic open lichen woodland and the closed crown forest. This major horizontal sectioning of the two areas reflects the steady dropping of temperature from south to north. The more northern subarctic lichen woodland is a handsome landscape mostly unknown to Canadians because of its few settlements and roads(and also very abundant black flies!). Northern stands of scattered spruce and jack pine, accompanied by balsam fir in Quebec, form attractive open-canopied areas carpeted with yellow, green and light grey lichens. Visual awareness primarily involves seeing what is directly in front of you, but it can be influenced by a three-dimensional representation of the object in view retained by the brain. If you see the back of a person’s head, the brain infers that there is a face on the front of it. We know this is true because we would be very startled if a mirror revealed that the front was exactly like the back. 1, record 94, English, - visual%20awareness

Brief flashes of colored light enable researchers to infer the minimum time required for visual awareness. A disk of red light is projected for 20 milliseconds, followed immediately by a 20-millisecond flash of green light. But the observer reports seeing a single flash of yellow, the color that would be apparent if red and green were projected simultaneously. The subject does not become aware of red followed by green until the length of the flashes is extended to 60 to 70 milliseconds. 1, record 94, English, - visual%20awareness

1, record 94, French, - perception%20visuelle%20consciente
