Because of significant advantages, the kraft process has become established as the world's dominant pulping method. Nonetheless, the process also has some severe shortcomings.... Two add-on technologies date from pre-1970, the polysulfide process(used commercially on a limited basis) and the H2S pretreatment process(demonstrated at the pilot plant level). Both methods are successful in providing significant increases in pulp yield, up to 7 % on dry wood. Unfortunately, both methods are associated with increased concentration of sulfur in the chemical cycle, which exacerbates the odor problem. Additionally, both methods require further processing steps that increase the capital and operating costs of the pulp mill.

The moisture content of wheat is an indication of its milling value. The drier the wheat, the greater the yield of flour(usually calculated on a constant moisture basis of 14%). Moisture content must be known to determine the amount of water that must be added during the tempering process. A high moisture content may also mean that the wheat should be turned periodically if extended storage is contemplated.

spouted bed gasifier.... a single-chamber air-fed gasifier operated on a cyclical basis, to yield a high calorific-value gas essentially uncontaminated by carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Wood chips or wood pellets are fed on top of a bed of hot sand in the reactor, and are then mixed by spouting the bed using steam. Some gasification occurs during this phase, but most takes place during the ensuing "cooking" phase during which the bed is static. When the temperature has fallen to a suitably low value air is admitted to burn the char and raise the temperature of the sand to its original value. Wood is then added to begin a new cycle.
