In proteome analysis, complex protein mixtures, derived from entire tissue material or cells, are separated by high resolution 2D-PAGE. Both mathematical models of the action of a chemostat and experimental studies show that a single-stage chemostat of practical size cannot yield a high concentration of a product and low concentrations of unconsumed raw materials. The inefficiency is particularly great in the synthesis of products such as penicillin, which is a secondary metabolite : it is made by living cells but its synthesis does not arise in the course of the metabolism that keeps the cells alive and growing. It is characteristic of the industrial production of a secondary metabolite that the proliferation of the organism precedes the accumulation of the metabolite by a significant margin. 2, record 5, English, - chemostat

Hypericum foliosum Aiton, is a beautiful Azorean endemic species whose populations currently yield a low number of individuals in many of the archipelago islands. In order to find an effective ex situ multiplication strategy for this plant several studies were carried out. During a 3 years span the germination capacity of its seeds was tested. The essays took place under a continuous temperature of 15°C and 10-20°C alternate, for a period of 8 hours light and total darkness, In alternate temperature tests the light period was made to coincide with the highest temperature. The species showed a positive photosensitivity and germination percentage of 67% under a continuous 15°C temperature. 1, record 8, English, - positive%20photosensitivity

An irrigated corn study to evaluate the interference effects of velvetleaf in corn was conducted in 1994 near Ft. Collins, CO as a repeat of the same study which was conducted in 1993. Both studies are being used to develop corn yield regression equations for Colorado conditions as part of the NC-202 regional bioeconomic modeling research project. Five velvetleaf densities ranging from 0 to 14 velvetleaf plants per meter of row were used to establish a velvetleaf density gradient. Two to three velvetleaf plants per meter of row reduced corn yield 20%. 2, record 13, English, - per%20meter%20of%20row
