A new development in mulch technology is the wavelength-selective film. It provides much of the weed control benefit of black plastic mulch, but warms the soil more than does black mulch. Thermic films, such as the IR-303 Thermofilm, were originally developed as greenhouse covers. They are reputed to reduce maximum and increase minimum temperatures slightly more than standard polyethylene films. These thermic films may have a role as hoop-supported row covers(tunnels). Weed control from herbicides applied before the mulch may break down in advance of crop maturity. An alternative to the clear mulch/herbicide system is the IRT or wavelength selective mulch system. In a replicated yield trial, established in 1987 at 4 locations in southern Manitoba, Double Delight ripened approx equal to 10 days later than Red River with the first harvest occurring on 25 August. Fruit yield averaged 1. 22 kg/m2 at all sites while low cane densities(6 m2) generally gave higher yields. Numbers of fruit/cane were similar to Red River(50). To identify QTLs associated with horticultural yield it is necessary to conduct replicated plot trials of the tested genotypes. The first step in the utilization of an introgression-line(IL) population of Lycopersicon pennellii in a processing-tomato variety(M82) for mapping such QTLs was to screen 51 ILs in a non-replicated plot trial. The results of this survey were compared to those obtained in a replicated trial of the same genotypes grown as single plants at wide spacing.
