The Novaya Zemlya coastal polynya with young ice is a preferred sailing route for icebreakers in east-west transit, if the ice conditions further south are difficult. An icebreaker track is observed in the image as a bright line through the dark young ice.

Trafic des brise-glaces. Quand le bâtiment passe à travers la glace, les morceaux de banquise environnants se brisent et dérivent dans le sillage du bateau. Une accumulation de hummocks, de taille et de concentration différentes, couvre le chenal ainsi creusé. La durée d'ouverture du passage est tributaire du type de glace brisée par le bateau. Par exemple, dans la banquise côtière, le chenal se refermera rapidement (à quelques longueurs du bateau). Il ne se refermera pas du tout dans les cas de glace fissurée.
