The term "horse vaulting" is a bit misleading. It brings to mind the aerial leaps performed in gymnastic competitions on a padded stationary block. But the actual sport of horse vaulting is one of the three classic disciplines of horseback riding, the other two being dressage and jumping. ... While vaulting does include jumping onto and off of a moving horse, it also involves much more, as I learned on a visit to watch the Great Falls Vaulting Team practice. Led by coach Jennifer Williams, the team’s members ride bareback, kneel and stand on a moving horse, and perform the sort of riding tricks you might see in a circus. 1, record 1, English, - horse%20vaulting

A cavesson resembles a heavy, well fitting halter and is the preferred headpiece for longeing(lungeing) English horses. "Breaking" cavessons are generally made of stout leather with heavy metal nosepieces and have straps to fasten them securely and keep them in position because during "breaking" it is often necessary to tug or pull quite hard on the line to control the horse. Lighter, simpler cavessons are also available for the very young horse, the already-trained horse, for use with a bit or bridle, and for use as a dropped noseband. 4, record 5, English, - caveson%20bridle
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The traditional cavesson is made from leather but nylon cavessons are also available. A longeing (lungeing) cavesson has a padded noseband with a jointed metal nosepiece that usually has 3 swivel-mounted rings attached to it. Generally the middle ring is used for longeing (lungeing) unless a horse carries his head to the outside of the circle extremely. In that case, the inside cavesson ring can be used to bend the horse inward on the longeing (lungeing) circle. The side rings are also used for side rein attachment or long line attachment. 4, record 5, English, - caveson%20bridle

In 1924 it was ordered that breeding of the Finnhorse be divided into two branches. Breeding of the heavy type for agricultural and forestry work continued with increased attention to developing a lighter type suitable for riding and racing. Today, the heavy Finnhorse is still used for forestry work, as a horse is less damaging to a young forest than heavy equipment. However, they are not used as frequently in agriculture since mechanization. Trotting is very popular in Finland and about 40 percent of the horses racing there are Finnhorses. 2, record 6, English, - Finnish%20draught%20horse

The exact origin of the Bashkir Curly is one of the greatest mysteries of the horse world.... The modern day history of American Bashkir Curly dates to 1898, when young Peter Damele(Duh-mel' ly) and his father were riding the Peter Hanson mountain range in the remote high country of Central Nevada, near Austin. Peter, who passed away in 1981 at age 90, could vividly recall the strange sight they saw of three horses with tight curly ringlets over their entire bodies.... The Bashkir Curly transmits the curly characteristic to its offspring about fifty percent of the time, even when mated to horses without the curly coat. They also seem to be a hardy breed and able to survive severe winter conditions. 2, record 12, English, - American%20Bashkir%20Curly

Toutes robes admises. 1, record 12, French, - Bashkir%20Curly%20Am%C3%A9ricain

Crib-biting and wind-sucking are different varieties of the same vice, which are learned chiefly by young horses. In each case the horse swallows air. A ’crib-biter’ effects this by grasping the edge of the manger or some other convenient fixture with the incisor teeth; it then raises the floor of the mouth; the soft palate is forced open; a swallowing movement occurs; and a gulp of air is passed down the gullet into the stomach. A ’wind-sucker’ achieves the same end, but it does not require a resting-place for the teeth.... Some horses which have been crib-biters learn to wind-suck when remedial measures are taken, and there are some wind-suckers which learn to crib-bite. 2, record 13, English, - crib

1, record 13, French, - tiquer%20%C3%A0%20l%27appui
