In August, 2007, the Settlement Workers in Schools(SWIS) program sponsored a pilot project to prepare newly arrived youth for entry to eight(8) high schools in Ontario. Called Newcomer Orientation Week or NOW, this intensive orientation initiative was piloted in six(6) high schools in Toronto, one(1) in Peel Region and one(1) in Hamilton. The NOW program was strategically positioned to occur just prior to the beginning of the school year. In NOW, former newcomer students are trained to lead the activities with the newly arrived students. The overall concept of NOW is that newcomer youth begin to feel more comfortable in the school setting and, if they run into difficulties, know how to get support-from PLs, teachers and/or SWIS workers. Le Programme de surveillance côtière de la GRC veut recruter les yeux et les oreilles des habitants des communautés côtières, pour lutter contre l'importation de drogues. Le but du programme est double : Enseigner aux gens quoi surveiller, les aider à transmettre efficacement tout renseignement au service d'application de la loi pertinente. Si vous êtes propriétaire d'un bateau de plaisance ou commercial, préposé à un quai de ravitaillement en combustible ou courtier maritime, ou si vous vivez ou travaillez près de l'eau, vous pouvez jouer un rôle vital dans le cadre du Programme de surveillance côtière. This component of the Young Canada Works program of Canadian Heritage provides up to 300 jobs for Aboriginal youths living in urban centres served by the 114 Friendship Centres across the country. Participants are eligible if they are high-school or post-secondary students, graduates or unemployed Aboriginal youths between the ages of 16 and 24. Successful candidates may be asked to develop, supervise or manage Aboriginal youth activities within the Friendship Centre. The work varies widely, depending on the needs of the participating Centre. Participants may be involved in activities ranging from youth and children's programs to cultural and recreation projects to various counselling programs. Of the Manitoba Rural Development. Green Team provides summer employment from June to September for youth 16 to 24 years of age in rural Manitoba. The program also achieves key objectives including park infrastructure and mechanical maintenance, interpretive services, tourism promotion in Provincial Parks and other visitor-oriented natural areas, special projects, grounds improvement and back country cleanup on recreational routes and rural Dutch Elm disease tree replacement.
