Formed at Riverview High School in January 1996, STAR speaks out against prejudicial and violent gang behaviors and encourages positive social activities. It recognizes that youth who often get involved in gangs are decent teenagers who have made negative choices. Working with a teacher coordinator and other community partners, including police, students plan fun activities and events that celebrate diversity and communicate a positive message of hope and friendship among students from all backgrounds. Over the next year, high school students throughout the province will be encouraged to develop programs similar to STAR promoting respect and understanding.
