In 1961, the Canadian Science Fairs Council was formed. In 1966, the Council was replaced by the Youth Science Foundation. Its purposes went beyond science fairs and extended to supporting scientists and teachers, coordinating extra-curricular activities in science, engineering and technology, and promoting a better understanding of the role of these fields in national and international affairs. In 1995, the organization changed its name to Youth Science Foundation Canada and, in 2008, to Youth Science Canada.

The Government of Canada is helping young Canadians gain the work experience they need to get a good job. Under the Youth Employment Strategy, the federal government is building partnerships with the private sector to help Canada's young people bridge the gap between education and employment. The strategy includes funds for the creation of new youth employment opportunities. A crucial part of this strategy is the Science Horizons program, designed to help young people gain valuable work experience in the scientific and technological fields that are driving the new economy. A number of science-based federal departments are participating in the program, which funds science and technology internships.
