The Mackenzie River Basin Board was created as a forum for cooperative water management within the huge Mackenzie River Basin(covering one-sixth of the area of Canada). The Yukon Transboundary Agreement between Canada and the Gwich’in Tribal Council forms Appendix C of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement. The Agreement sets out the rights of the Tetlin Gwich’in in Yukon. Tetlin Gwich’in refers to Gwich’in who reside in the Peel River watershed, or who are descendants from such a person. The Agreement provides for the transfer of 1554 square kilometres of land to Tetlin Gwich’in. Legal ownership is vested in the Gwich’in Tribal Council.
