Z1 TRUSS SEGMENT [3 records]

Record 1 2005-03-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

The first segment to be launched into orbit, designated Z1, will not permanently attach to other truss segments. The Z1 segment is a 10 ft(3 m) cubelike truss made from six machined bulkheads that are bolted together. The truss houses four control moment gyroscopes that form part of the guidance, navigation, and control system. The location of Z1 is nearly in the middle of the station, which makes it an ideal location for the gyroscopes. A micrometeor shield composed of three sheets of 0. 25 in.(6 mm) aluminum about 5 in.(127 mm) apart protects the sensitive gyroscopes from debris. The 18, 300 lb(8, 300 kg) Z1 segment is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of this year. The truss is a transitional structure that will connect to the pressurized Unity module already on orbit. Astronauts will tighten 16 motorized bolts on the circular coupling on the Unity module side into nuts on Z1 and connect the associated utility plug-ins. Pressurized units generally have circular couplings and nonpressurized unit connectors are rectangular.

CONT

The Z1 truss segment is equipped with several spacewalk aids : Two EVA tool stowage devices(ETSDs), 22 worksite interface(WIF) sockets, 1 flight-releasable grapple fixture(FRGF), 11 trusses, 2 tray launch restraints, numerous standard handholds and handrails, and several custom handles.

OBS

The first piece of truss structure - we refer to it as the Z1 Truss because it is the zenith or uppermost - will be on the uppermost part of the station or the top; the zenith.

CONT

Relocate P6 Truss from atop Z1 Truss to final assembly locationattached to P5 Truss(becomes final port-side truss segment).

OBS

The assembly sequence of the trusses on the International Space Station does not usually correspond to the number assigned to each segment of the struss structure. Trusses are numbered as follows: P1, P3, P4, P5, P6 (port side) and S1, S3, S4, S5, S6 (starboard side). In this case, the P6 truss is referred to as the final port-side truss segment.

OBS

final port-side truss segment: term officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

OBS

CONT

The P6 truss ... houses a deployable radiator. Ammonia coolant lines from the U.S. laboratory module ultimately will be connected through the Z1 truss to the radiator to dissipate heat generated by the lab’s electronic gear. At launch, P6 weighs 17.5 tons and measures 16-by-16-by 49 feet.

CONT

The P6 truss will connect to Z1 to provide auxiliary power for station construction and primary power to the U. S. laboratory that will be attached to the Unity module early in the launch schedule. When the station is nearly fully assembled, P6 will then be removed from the Z1 truss and placed in its final position on the end of the station's main truss. The rectangular coupling where the P6 segment was attached to Z1 will remain unoccupied.

OBS

The P6 truss is a component of the photovoltaic module.

CONT
