Allongé sur près de 1 800 km du nord-ouest au sud-est depuis la frontière turque (où il se raccorde au Taurus oriental) jusqu'au-dessus de Bandar 'Abbas [barre sur le deuxième «a» de «Abbas»] et du détroit d'Ormuz, large de 250 km en moyenne, le Zagros dépasse 4 500 mètres d'altitude dans la partie centrale au sud-sud-ouest d'Ispahan.
