The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power.... The U. S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U. S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia.... The Zarya module is 41. 2 feet long and 13. 5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes.

The Zarya module now provides orientation control, communications and electrical power attached to the passive Unity module while the station awaits launch of the third component, a Russian-provided crew living quarters and early station core known as the Service Module... The Service Module will enhance or replace many functions of the Zarya. Later in the station's assembly sequence, the Zarya module will be used primarily for its storage capacity and external fuel tanks.

Now permanently attached to the Zarya control module in space [, ] Unity has six berthing ports, one on each side, one which is already attached to Zarya. [The] Future U. S. station modules and [the] station components will attach to the remaining five ports... Unity is the first of three such connecting modules that will be built for the station. Sometimes referred to as Node 1, the Unity module measures 15 feet in diameter and 18 feet long. Once it has reached the correct orientation for rendezvous with the already-orbiting International Space Station comprised of the Russian Zarya control module and the US Unity module, Zvezda becomes the passive vehicle in the final approach and docking operations. As the passive target vehicle, Zvezda will maintain a station-keeping orbit as the active Zarya control module performs the rendezvous and docking under ground control using the Russian automated rendezvous and docking system(Kurs).

... The Progress supply vehicle to the ISS [International Space Station] is an automated version of the Soyuz, and was developed to carry propellant and cargo to the Salyut and Mir space station. It will serve the same purpose for the ISS. Although the ISS has its own propulsion system, generally it is the Progress vehicle that will perform periodic reboost maneuvers to maintain the ISS orbital altitude. The Progress is approximately the same size as the Soyuz, but it has a slightly higher mass at launch of approximately 7150 kg. The Progress spacecraft docks automatically to the ISS, and the TORU [Teleoperated Control System-Manual Docking System on Zarya] system acts as a backup remote control docking system. Progress is composed of three modules : the Cargo Module, the Refueling Module, and the Instrument/Propulsion Module. A modified version of the Progress M, called the Progress M1, is planned for operation with the ISS. This version will have more propellant tanks for refueling, as the entire Refueling Module is devoted to fuel. Water will be carried in the Cargo Module. The Progress payload includes cargo in the pressurized Cargo Module and propellant in the Refueling Module. Excess propellant that is usually in the propulsion system tanks in the Instrumentation/Propulsion Module can also be used by the ISS.

The Service Module will include four docking ports, one in the aft Transfer Chamber and three in the spherical forward Transfer Compartment : one facing forward, one facing up and one facing down. The aft docking port has a probe and cone docking mechanism to allow dockings by Progress resupply spacecraft and Soyuz piloted spacecraft. It also will be outfitted with an automated rendezvous and docking system. The forward docking ports will all have hybrid docking mechanisms to allow docking with Zarya using the forward-facing port; with a Russian Science Power Platform to be delivered later in assembly using the down-facing port.

Two spacewalking cosmonauts set up a "Strela, "or "Arrow, "cargo boom outside the Pirs airlock last November. That telescoping crane can be extended to the rear end of the Zvezda crew module. Mounted to the opposite side of Pirs, the Strela boom installed by Onufrienko and Walz is positioned so that it can be reeled out to the end of the Zarya space tug, which is hooked up to the U. S. side of the station. Both booms are capable of hoisting cargoes that weigh as much as three tons. They can be operated either separately or simultaneously to move cargoes or spacewalkers around the outer hull of the Russian half of the outpost.

The Docking Compartment, also known as Pirs ("Pier") or Docking Module, provides the airlock for the spacewalks from the Russian segment of the International Space Station, ISS. The module features a large hatch, 1 meter in diameter, allowing spacesuited cosmonauts to exit and return to the station. (NASA developed its own, larger airlock for the US segment of the outpost.)

The Russian Docking Compartment also provides a third docking port for the arriving Russian spacecraft. Without Docking Compartment, the Russian manned Soyuz and Progress cargo ships can dock either to the aft port of the Zvezda service module, or to the Earth-facing(nadir) port of the Zarya control module.

Condensation in the ISS During Ingress Activities-Neither the Node nor FGB [Zarya Control Module] have an active condensate removal system, therefore, humidity and condensate control for the station must be performed by the Orbiter's air revitalization.

The Russian Mir recycles water for potable use from humidity condensate ISS will provide systems to recover and recycle all waste water in order to reduce the launch penalties associated with supplying water from the ground. The laboratory has the capability to assess the quality of this water to identify potential health significant contamination to ensure that these systems are functioning properly and that the water does not impair the health of the crew.
